What are food-grade cone bags?

Cone bags are triangular paper bags formed by rolling up a rectangular piece of paper. For generations they have been the classic packaging form for hand-served portions – nuts, confectionery, candied almonds at the Christmas market, chips at the snack bar, popcorn at the cinema. The pointed shape is not only practical (the contents slide to the tip and can be removed easily) but also a clear visual signal of artisan quality and direct selling.

For direct food contact, cone bags must meet special requirements. Standard printing paper is NOT food-grade – it often contains bleaching agents, printing inks and glue residues that can migrate into food. Food-grade cone bags are made from food-grade paper: glassine (translucent, grease-resistant), parchment (genuine parchment paper, ovenproof), unbleached kraft paper (natural brown, organic look). All three variants are food-grade to EU 10/2011 and approved for direct contact with food.

Our range of food-grade cone bags covers the typical hand-served portion sizes: 125 g, 250 g, 500 g. In glassine (translucent), parchment (cream-coloured) or natural-brown kraft paper. For confectionery sales we often recommend the printed glassine variant; for organic nuts and baked goods the unbleached kraft-paper look; for ovenproof applications (e.g. hot-served chips or candied almonds) parchment paper.

What are food-grade cone bags suitable for?

  • Nuts & almonds: the classic hand-served portion at the weekly market or snack bar
  • Candied almonds: Christmas-market standard, artisan feel
  • Baked-goods portions: sweet pastries, slices of stollen, piped biscuits
  • Chips & snack bar: the classic chip cone made of parchment
  • Organic packaging: natural-food brands with an artisan feel
  • Gift packaging: small, handmade food gifts

Which cone-bag variant is the right one?

  • 125 g: sampling portion, small snacks
  • 250 g: standard hand-served portion for the weekly market
  • 500 g: larger portion or family portion
  • Glassine (translucent): contents visible through it, the classic confectionery look
  • Parchment paper: ovenproof, classic for chips or candied almonds
  • Natural-brown kraft paper: organic look, natural-food feel
  • With printing: brand logo, custom embossing
  • With window: for colourful confectionery in the glassine variant

Your advantages with food-grade cone bags from Elke Plastic

We have been importing packaging solutions directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For cone bags, the paper quality is decisive: food conformity must not be compromised by printing inks or bleaching agents. Our suppliers work exclusively with food-grade paper to EU 10/2011 and provide declarations of conformity on request.

Our packaging specialists advise on the right paper choice for your application: for confectionery sales at the weekly market, the printed glassine variant is optimal. For organic nuts and natural-food brands, unbleached kraft paper is the right choice. For hot, ovenproof food (chips, candied almonds) you need heat-resistant parchment paper.

Shipping is from our German warehouse. Standard sizes are usually in stock; custom printing is scheduled individually within the delivery window. All customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive tiered pricing. Free samples and declarations of conformity on request.

Frequently asked questions about food-grade cone bags

What is the difference between glassine, parchment and kraft paper?

Glassine: translucent, grease-resistant, the classic confectionery look. Parchment paper: cream-coloured, ovenproof, classic for hot food. Kraft paper: natural brown, breathable, organic look. All three are available in a food-grade version.

Are the bags food-grade?

Yes, all standard cone bags in our food range are certified to EU 10/2011. Approved for direct food contact.

Which size is standard?

For weekly-market sales 250 g (the usual hand-served portion). For sampling sets 125 g. For family or gift packs 500 g. For chip stands there is a dedicated size range.

How are cone bags rolled?

The paper is rolled into a cone and the lower tip folded over. At the weekly market, traders often roll the bags by hand, very quickly and with practised ease. For high-volume applications there are ready-made cone bags.

Can the bags hold hot food?

Parchment paper yes – ovenproof up to approx. 200 °C. Glassine and standard kraft paper are not heat-resistant for prolonged direct contact with steaming food.

Are the bags grease-resistant?

Glassine is highly grease-resistant (typical for confectionery). Parchment paper is also grease-resistant (typical for chips). Standard kraft paper is NOT grease-resistant – for greasy contents choose glassine or parchment.

Can the bags be printed?

Yes, with food-grade printing inks. For market traders, custom printing with a logo is often worthwhile. For smaller runs, labelling is more practical.

Are sustainable cone bags available?

Kraft-paper cone bags are the most sustainable material – natural, biodegradable, recyclable with waste paper. The right choice for organic and natural-food brands. Glassine and parchment are also paper-based and suitable for waste-paper recycling.

How long does food keep in cone bags?

For hand-served portions consumed immediately: irrelevant. For storage, glassine and parchment are better than kraft paper (less moisture absorption). For long-term storage, resealable packaging is more suitable.

Which mandatory information is required?

For immediate-consumption hand-served portions usually none – the food is openly visible and identifiable. For pre-packed food with a longer shelf life, the EU food-information (FIC) labelling requirements apply.

Can allergen information be printed on?

Yes, custom printing with allergen information is available. Important for market traders with allergic customers or for food containing allergens subject to declaration.

Which order quantity makes sense?

Stock items in standard sizes are available from small quantities. For custom printing, larger runs are worthwhile. For market traders, the mix of stock goods and stamped labels is often the most efficient solution.
