Delivery, samples and custom production for spice producers
Shipping is fast and reliable from our German warehouse. The standard range without individual printing is available from stock – ideal for hobby spice blenders and small BBQ producers.
Free samples before your first order: test the aluminum barrier effect and zip closure with your actual spices before you order larger quantities. Especially for aroma-sensitive varieties (pepper variety blends, saffron) we recommend a comparison test with different materials.
Custom production with individual printing of your spice brand identity (logo, variety name, region, ingredients), bespoke sizes or alternative closure options is available. A declaration of conformity to EU 10/2011 with every delivery.
What are stand-up pouches for spices?
Stand-up pouches for spices – also called spice doypacks, spice stand-up pouches or spice bags with a bottom gusset – are the free-standing doypack construction with an aluminum inner layer, made specially for spice producers and direct marketers. They combine a free-standing POS presentation with the maximum light protection that essential spice oils need.
Spices are particularly aroma-sensitive. Under light and oxygen, pepper loses its sharpest notes within a few weeks, saffron fades, cardamom loses its floral notes. Standard composite films without aluminum are not enough for high-quality spices – the aluminum inner barrier is essential.
Material: composite film with an aluminum inner layer (the standard for premium spices), a printable outer shell (PET, kraft paper, with a window). With a zip closure for repeated kitchen removal. Certified food-grade to EU 10/2011 and LFGB.
For classic standard spices (pepper, paprika, curry, cinnamon), the stand-up pouch with zip is the best-selling construction. For particularly delicate specialities such as saffron or cardamom, see also the pure aluminum variant.
What are stand-up pouches for spices used for?
Stand-up pouches for spices are the standard choice in the modern spice industry – from organic direct marketers to premium spice producers.
- Spice producers for sales to cafés, restaurants and end customers – 250 g and 500 g standard formats
- Organic direct marketers for the farm shop, weekly market and online shop with an organic look (kraft-paper outside)
- BBQ spice brands for rubs, marinade powders and steakhouse spices in 100–250 g
- Asian-spice importers for curry blends, garam masala, five-spice and exotic powders
- Highest-quality specialities such as saffron, cardamom or vanilla – often in a small 5–10 g format
- Wedding and gift sets with various spice assortments in smaller bags
The free-standing doypack construction is particularly decisive on the sales shelf – spice brands stand more elegantly than with flat bags and are more likely to be picked up.
Which stand-up pouches for spices suit you?
The right variant depends on spice sensitivity, brand positioning and sales format.
- Aluminum inner layer – essential for all spices with essential oils (pepper, curry, cinnamon, BBQ rubs)
- With zip closure – essential for kitchen storage with repeated removal
- With window – visible spice look at the POS, especially with colourful blends
- Kraft-paper outside with an aluminum inside – an organic look for organic brands and farm-shop direct marketers (see the kraft-paper variant)
- Size classes: 5–10 g for saffron/premium samples, 25–50 g for standard spices, 100–250 g for a family format, 500 g and 1 kg for catering
- Printing with the spice name, region (e.g. Madagascar pepper), ingredients and FIC mandatory information
Standard spice ranges are usually sold in 100–250 g. Premium specialities are often in smaller formats for higher margins.
Advantages of stand-up pouches for spices
Maximum aroma protection: an aluminum inner layer blocks UV and oxygen – the two main causes of spice aroma loss. Pepper retains its heat longer, curry its complexity, vanilla its floral notes.
POS presentation: a free-standing doypack construction with a large printing area front and back. Room for a spice story (e.g. “hand-picked from Madagascar”), region, ingredients, kitchen-use notes. More elegant on the shelf than flat spice bags.
End-customer convenience: a zip closure allows clean dosing in the kitchen without spilling or aroma loss. Kitchen spice storage in the cupboard or spice rack straight from the original bag. A declaration of conformity to EU 10/2011 supports compliant placing on the market for sale in food retail.
Frequently asked questions about stand-up pouches for spices
Why do spices need an aluminum inner layer?
Spices contain essential oils that quickly escape under light and oxygen. Pepper loses its heat, saffron fades, cardamom loses its floral notes. Aluminum foil blocks almost 100 % of UV and oxygen – the two main causes. Standard composite without aluminum is not enough for premium spices.
Which size for 50 g of spice?
For 50 g of spice powder, typically an 80×140 mm stand-up pouch with an approx. 50 mm bottom gusset. For 100 g, 100×160 mm; for 250 g, 130×220 mm. Premium specialities such as saffron often in a smaller 30×70 mm for a 1–3 g format.
With or without zip?
For kitchen storage with repeated removal: definitely with zip. For industrial first packing or caterer quantities (5 kg+), also possible without a zip with a tight seal. For end-customer sales, practically always with zip.
Food-grade certification?
Yes, all stand-up pouches for spices are certified to EU 10/2011, often additionally LFGB. A declaration of conformity is supplied on request. For organic certifications such as Demeter or organic-association brands, further certificates on request.
Suitable with a window for colourful spice blends?
Yes – with a window, colourful blends (BBQ rubs, curry pastes, steakhouse spices) sell particularly well at the POS. The window is made of crystal-clear film, the rest of an aluminum composite for aroma protection. The best combination of visibility and protection.
How long do spices keep in aluminum stand-up pouches?
In unopened packaging with an aluminum inside, typically 18–24 months of aroma preservation. After opening with a zip closure, another 6–12 months optimal. Compared with standard composite (without aluminum), about 2–3× longer.
Suitable for organic spices?
Yes, with a kraft-paper outer shell and an aluminum inner barrier you combine an organic look with functional protection – see the kraft-paper variant. Organic brands often opt for this combination.
Which printing processes for spice bags?
Flexographic printing for affordable multi-colour designs (ideal for BBQ brands), gravure printing for premium quality (single-origin brands), digital printing for small runs under 1,000 units (hobby producers). We calculate individually depending on the run.
Printable with FIC mandatory information?
Yes – ingredients, allergen information, best-before-date field, nutrition table, manufacturer details, net weight: all directly printable. Especially for organic brands also organic seals, the Demeter logo, GOTS-certificate references. → request custom production.
Suitable for hobby spice blenders?
Yes – we also supply in standard stock quantities with no minimum purchase (no minimum order value). Standard stand-up pouches for spices available from a small pack. Ideal for hobby BBQ blenders, small farm-shop ranges and trial runs before larger orders.
Suitable for salts and salt blends?
Yes – salts are less aroma-sensitive than spices but need moisture protection. Aluminum stand-up pouches are perfect: moisture-tight, with a zip for dry kitchen storage. For fine salts (fleur de sel, smoked salt, Himalayan salt) even as standard packaging.
