What are 4-ply block bottom bags?
4-ply block bottom bags are classic kraft paper sacks with a block bottom (a rectangular, foldable base for standing upright) and a multi-layer wall build of 4 bonded kraft paper plies. The multi-ply build is not a marketing flourish but a technical necessity: for heavy powders such as flour, baking mixes, animal feed granulates or industrial powders in 1–5 kg quantities, the sack needs a considerably higher strength than single-ply paper can provide. The four plies distribute the load and prevent sharp granulate grains from piercing through the wall or the seam from splitting when the sack is lifted.
Most of our 4-ply block bottom bags have a PE-coated inner ply inside for moisture protection, or a pure kraft paper inner ply for breathable applications. With flour, seeds and some foods, breathability is important, because the contents are otherwise prone to mould formation. For moisture-sensitive powders (white flour, baking powder, some granulates) the PE inner layer is the right choice. The block bottom is valve-controlled or cross-sealed for machine or manual sealing.
Our range of 4-ply block bottom bags covers standard sizes from 1 kg up to 25 kg. For food contact, food-grade variants are available (compliant with EU 10/2011). The natural brown kraft paper look is standard; printed or bleached variants are available. For flour mills, bakeries and animal feed producers, this type of packaging has been the proven industry standard for decades.
What are 4-ply block bottom bags suitable for?
- Flour, baking mixes, baking powder: the classic for mills and bakeries
- Animal feed & feed meal: heavy granulate in 5–10 kg units
- Industrial powders & granulates: plastic granulate, cleaning powders, construction chemicals
- Fertilisers & garden substrates: heavy powders and granulates for gardening and agriculture
- Heavy baking ingredients: marzipan, honey granulate, large quantities of flour
- Wood pellets & fuels: pellets in handy 1–5 kg units
Which 4-ply variant is the right one?
- Fill volume 1–2 kg: consumer flour, artisan baking mixes
- Fill volume 5–10 kg: catering flour, animal feed, garden powders
- Fill volume 15–25 kg: industrial standard sizes, bulk animal feed units
- With PE inner layer: moisture protection for sensitive powders
- Pure kraft paper inner ply: breathable for flour, seeds, some foods
- With valve: self-venting during filling, ideal for powders with trapped air
- Cross-sealed: manual sealing with needle and thread or adhesive
- Food-grade: compliant with EU 10/2011 for flour, sugar, dry goods
Your advantages with 4-ply block bottom bags from Elke Plastic
We have been importing industrial packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For 4-ply block bottom bags, the material quality is decisive: thin or inferior kraft paper leads to tears when heavy bags are lifted – a single complaint case in shipping costs considerably more than a better film quality. Our suppliers meet the strict requirements for consistent tear resistance across the entire batch.
Our packaging specialists advise on the choice of inner ply and base configuration: for flour without clumping, valve sacks are ideal because they release the air in a controlled way during filling. For animal feed, a cross seam is often more practical. For moisture-sensitive powders, the PE inner layer is essential. This way you do not get a standard sack, but the optimal configuration for your contents.
Shipping takes place from a German warehouse. 4-ply standard sizes are generally in stock; custom sizes and printing are scheduled individually. Order any quantity for hobby applications. Frequently asked questions about 4-ply block bottom bags
Why 4-ply and not fewer?
For heavy powders and granulates from 1 kg upwards, 1- or 2-ply kraft paper is too thin. When the filled sack is lifted, the weight creates strong mechanical stress, particularly at the seam and base transitions. Four plies distribute this stress and prevent tears.
What does “block bottom” mean?
The block bottom is a rectangular, foldable base shape that opens out during filling and gives the sack a stable stance. Unlike the cross bottom bag, the base is large-area and very load-bearing – which is why it is the industry standard for heavy food and powder sacks.
With or without a PE inner layer?
With PE inner layer: moisture-tight, ideal for moisture-sensitive powders (white flour, baking powder, some granulates). Without PE inner layer (pure kraft paper inner ply): breathable, ideal for flour, seeds and some foods that would otherwise be prone to mould.
What is a valve sack?
Valve sacks have a small opening in the base with a non-return flap, through which the contents are filled by machine. During filling, the displaced air escapes and the valve closes automatically. For flour and powder granulate, the valve is the most efficient filling technique.
Are the sacks food-grade?
Yes, available for food contact. The inner ply must be food-grade certified – either an unsized kraft paper inner ply or a food-grade PE inner layer. We supply declarations of conformity on request.
Can the sacks be sealed?
Yes, depending on the base construction by gluing, sewing with thread or by additional adhesive tape closures at the sack mouth. For automated filling lines, precise specifications are important.
How much can I load them with?
4-ply standard bags safely hold 5–25 kg depending on the base construction. For higher loads there are 5- or 6-ply special versions – talk to us for industrial requirements.
Are the sacks weatherproof?
Pure kraft paper sacks without a PE coating are NOT waterproof – in driving rain they soften and lose their strength. With a PE inner or outer coating they are splash-proof. For outdoor storage we generally recommend a PE outer layer or an additional film overhang.
Can I print on the sacks?
Yes, printing in letterpress or flexographic printing is standard – from single-colour brand logos to detailed branding designs. For smaller runs, labelling is a flexible alternative.
How do 4-ply and natron sacks differ?
Natron kraft paper is a specific paper quality (chemically treated for higher strength) and can be used in a 1-, 2-, 3-, 4- or multi-ply build. “4-ply” refers only to the layer build, independently of the paper quality. For maximum strength, 4-ply natron paper is the most robust choice.
Are the sacks recyclable?
Pure kraft paper is recyclable in the waste paper stream. With a PE inner coating they are only of limited recyclability – single-stream disposal in the waste paper bin is usually not possible. On request we also supply pure paper variants without a coating.
