What are block bottom bags for herbs?
Block bottom bags for herbs are upright packaging bags with a rectangular block bottom whose material and inner-layer choice is tailored to the special requirements of dried herbs. Herbs are a natural product with a twofold challenge: on one hand they contain aromatic essential oils that evaporate through packaging that is too open; on the other hand, in fully sealed packaging they can retain residual moisture that leads to mould formation. The right packaging choice is a balanced compromise between aroma protection and breathability.
For aroma-intense herbs (peppermint, oregano, lavender, thyme), laminated film with an aroma barrier is usually the right choice – the herbs are fully dried and do not need breathability. For less aroma-intense herbs (parsley, chives, savory) and for brands with an organic/health-food claim, kraft paper block bags with a breathable inner layer are ideal. In both cases the block shape offers a stable stand on the shelf and supports the premium presentation of producer herb brands.
Our range of block bags for herbs covers fill volumes from 25 g (sample edition) to 250 g (family packs). With or without a window (especially interesting for herb blends with visually appealing petals), with or without a zip closure, in a laminated film or kraft paper variant. Food-grade compliance to EU 10/2011 is standard. On request we provide declarations of conformity and data sheets.

Frequently asked questions about herb block bottom bags
Laminated film or kraft paper for herbs?
For aroma-intense herbs (oregano, thyme, lavender): laminated film with an aroma barrier. For less aroma-intense herbs and organic brands: kraft paper with a PE inner layer or a breathable inner layer. For premium producers, kraft paper is often the strong brand choice.
Do herbs need breathable packaging?
Only if the herbs are not fully dried or may contain residual moisture. For cleanly dried herbs below 10 % residual moisture, breathability is not necessary – fully sealed packaging with aroma protection is even better.
Which fill size is standard?
In retail, 25–50 g dominate for aroma-intense herbs, 50–100 g for standard culinary herbs, 100–250 g for family packs. Large packs of 250 g and above are more common in catering or in the producer's direct sales.
With or without a window?
For colourful herb blends (herbes de Provence with lavender flowers, Italian herbs with tomato pieces), a window is a strong selling point. For UV-sensitive herbs (green leaves, natural colourings), fully sealed is better.
How long do herbs keep in packaging?
With laminated film and a clean initial seal: 18–24 months. With kraft paper (breathable): 12–18 months. Aroma-intense varieties lose intensity over time even with very good packaging – a fresh use-by period is advisable even with very good packaging.
Are the bags food-grade?
Yes, all standard films are food-grade compliant with EU 10/2011. We supply declarations of conformity for direct food contact on request.
Which printing suits herb brands?
Organic/health-food brands: minimalist designs on a kraft-paper look, natural brown earth tones. Premium pharmacy style: matt laminated film, classic typeface, dark accents. Wellness brands: light pastel tones, floral designs.
Which mandatory information is required?
Under the LMIV: name, list of ingredients for blends, net quantity, best-before date, responsible operator, allergens. For organic herbs, additionally the EU organic logo and the inspection body. For wild-harvested herbs, an origin statement.
Are sustainable variants available?
Yes, we have mono-material bags with a reduced aroma barrier and kraft paper bags with a mono-PE window in our range. For organic brands, these options are a visible sustainability signal without greenwashing risk.
Can the bags be disposed of in residual waste?
Classic laminated films are residual waste. Kraft paper bags with a PE inner layer can only go in paper recycling to a limited extent. Mono-material and pure kraft paper bags are properly recyclable.
Are smaller runs worthwhile for producers?
Yes. Stock items in standard sizes are available from the warehouse. Custom printing pays off from larger runs. For small herb producers we recommend starting with standard stock and labelling.
