What are sustainable flat bags?

Sustainable flat bags are the environmentally responsible version of the classic LDPE flat bag – the absolute volume standard in the packaging market. Precisely because flat bags are consumed in enormous quantities in shipping, in professional kitchens and in retail, a more sustainable construction has a major leverage effect. You have three strategies to choose from: PCR recyclate (recycled plastic from the consumer cycle), bio-PE from sugar cane (a bio-based material with a positive carbon footprint), or a mono-material construction for full recyclability after use.

The technical advantage of flat bags over more complex packaging: the single-layer structure makes the use of PCR and bio-PE relatively unproblematic. Whereas laminated films with high-barrier layers often cannot be produced from 100% recyclate, flat bags can be produced even with 80% PCR content. This makes flat bags one of the most recycling-friendly packaging options of all – provided food-grade PCR or ISCC-certified bio-PE is used.

Our range of sustainable flat bags covers all standard sizes, film thicknesses and applications. For shipping brands, PCR bags are the visibly sustainable choice; for food direct marketers we recommend food-grade PCR or bio-PE; for brands with an explicit circularity promise, mono-PE with a high PCR ratio. We supply GRS, ISCC and Recyclass certificates on request to document your sustainability claims.

What are sustainable flat bags suitable for?

  • Organic and natural food brands: packaging that matches the organic ethos
  • Eco-friendly shipping: online shops with an explicit eco promise
  • Direct marketing: farm shops with a sustainability story
  • Professional kitchens with ESG reporting: catering and hospitality with audit evidence
  • Refill and reusable concepts: reusable flat enclosure bags
  • Brands with recycling marketing: “X% from recyclate” as a verifiable advertising claim

Which sustainability variant is the right one?

  • PCR-LDPE 30%: entry-level recycling, cost-efficient, visible marketing effect
  • PCR-LDPE 80%: maximum recycling ratio, premium sustainability positioning
  • Bio-PE from sugar cane: advantageous carbon footprint, bio-based, ISCC Plus certified
  • Mono-LDPE: fully recyclable via kerbside collection
  • Food-grade PCR: PCR approved specifically for food contact
  • Mono-PE plus PCR: the most sustainable variant – recycled and recyclable
  • Printing: mineral-oil-free printing inks for full recycling compatibility
  • Certificates: GRS, ISCC, Recyclass depending on marketing needs

Your benefits with sustainable flat bags from Elke Plastic

We have been importing packaging bags since 1976 and have known the market for sustainable films since the first pilot projects of the 1990s. For you that means honest advice rather than marketing platitudes. We tell you clearly which variant offers genuine added value, which certificates are robust and which advertising claims you may communicate with legal certainty – without the risk of a warning notice through vague “eco” promises.

Flat bags are technically a rewarding field of application for sustainability: the simple single-layer structure allows high PCR ratios without any loss of functionality. Our suppliers work with tested formulations, so that even 80% PCR films remain reliably tear-resistant and sealable. For your own filling processes we advise you on the right sealing and welding parameters.

Dispatch is from our German warehouse. Sustainable standard sizes are usually in stock; custom recycling ratios and printing are scheduled accordingly. All customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive tiered pricing directly in the order table (no minimum order value). Free samples and GRS/ISCC certificates are of course available on request.

Frequently asked questions about sustainable flat bags

What makes a flat bag sustainable?

Three key properties: (1) recycled material (PCR recyclate) in the construction, (2) bio-based raw materials such as bio-PE from sugar cane, (3) a mono-material construction for full recyclability. Ideally a variant combines several of these properties – mono-PE with PCR content is the optimum.

Are flat bags particularly well suited to sustainability?

Yes. The simple single-layer structure of an LDPE flat bag allows high PCR ratios (up to 80%) without any loss of functionality. More complex laminated films (with aluminum or EVOH) cannot technically achieve such high recycling ratios. Flat bags are therefore the most recycling-friendly packaging category.

What is the difference between PCR and bio-PE?

PCR recyclate is reprocessed waste plastic from the consumer cycle. Bio-PE is obtained from sugar cane ethanol and is chemically identical to conventional PE. PCR reduces the need for virgin material, while bio-PE reduces the need for fossil raw materials. Both have a place in a sustainable range.

Are sustainable flat bags food-grade?

Yes, food-grade variants are available. PCR for food contact must be tested more strictly – we supply declarations of conformity on request. Bio-PE is fully food-grade, as it is chemically identical to standard PE.

What does GRS mean?

GRS (Global Recycled Standard) is an internationally recognised certificate that provides seamless proof of recycled content from the collection point through to the finished product. For advertising with recycling ratios, GRS is the most robust form of evidence.

Are the bags identifiable in kerbside recycling?

Mono-LDPE is recognised in standard sorting plants and recycled in the PE stream. For maximum sortability we recommend printing the resin code (PE-LD). Classic LDPE flat bags are PE-stream compatible.

What claims may I communicate on the packaging?

Verifiable facts such as “made from X% recycled material (PCR)” or “made from bio-based material (bio-PE)” are unproblematic, provided certificates are available. Avoid vague wording such as “eco” or “green” – these are legally sensitive.

How much CO2 do I save?

PCR films typically save 30–50% CO2 compared with virgin material. Bio-PE can even be carbon-negative over its entire life cycle in balance terms. We will pass on specific cradle-to-gate data on request.

How much more expensive are sustainable flat bags?

Typically a 10–30% surcharge. For high-volume items the surcharge often pays off quickly through end-customer acceptance and brand image. For shipping brands with a sustainability positioning, the packaging itself is a marketing tool.

Which printing suits sustainable bags?

Mineral-oil-free and water-based printing inks preserve recyclability. For authentic brand communication we recommend designs that reference a specific recycling ratio or bio-PE content – this comes across as credible.

Do small print runs make sense?

Yes. Stock items in standard sizes are available ex warehouse. Custom printing pays off from larger quantities upwards. For tests and sampling, standard stock with a sustainable construction is sufficient.
