What are sealed edge bags?
Sealed edge bags are flexible packaging bags whose opening is heat-sealed with a film sealer. This makes them sealed tight in a single operation – which makes them ideal for vacuum packaging, sterile storage or foods that need a long shelf life.
The material is usually multi-layer laminate with an inner sealing layer. Food-grade certified for direct food contact.
What are sealed edge bags suitable for?
- Vacuuming: give fresh and frozen goods a long shelf life
- Food manufacturers: sausage, cheese, smoked goods, meat
- Bakery: airtight packed baked goods with a long shelf life
- Pharmacy: sterile packaging for medical applications
- Industry: corrosion protection for metal parts
- Sample shipping: samples sealed tight in a single operation
Which sealed edge bags do we offer?
- Transparent sealed edge bags – crystal clear, visible contents
- Food-grade sealed edge bags – certified to EU 10/2011
Benefits of sealed edge bags
- Maximum tightness: the heat-sealed closure is absolutely tight.
- Vacuum-capable: for a long shelf life of foods.
- Food-grade to EU 10/2011.
- Hygiene standard: sealed once, tamper-evident.
- Transparent for product visibility.
- Printable with a logo or mandatory information.
- Private & commercial – standard quantities and bulk orders.
- Fast shipping from our German warehouse.
Material properties of sealed edge bags in detail
Sealed edge bags are flat-sealed film bags, usually made from OPP or PE laminate with an edge sealed on all sides. Material thickness and laminate determine transparency, barrier and processing speed on the packaging line.
OPP 30 / PE 30 — transparent standard laminate
Crystal-clear film with high brilliance and stiffness. OPP on the outside for printability and appearance, PE on the inside for the sealing seam. Standard for confectionery, baked goods, sweets, pralines and food presentation packaging.
PET12 / PE — transparent premium barrier
PET as the outer layer for higher mechanical stability, PE sealing layer. Higher puncture and tear resistance, better aroma barrier. Suitable for baked goods and dry products with a longer best-before date.
OPP / metallised / PE — light barrier
With a metallised intermediate layer (vacuum aluminisation), no solid aluminum. Aroma and light barrier of almost 100%, with a shiny silver appearance. Popular for crisps, snacks, the premium confectionery segment.
Food suitability
All materials are certified to EU 10/2011 for direct food contact. Declaration of conformity (DoC) on request.
Processing on packaging lines
Standard delivery form: on a roll with defined perforations for machine filling and heat sealing. For manual filling, also available as individual bags.
Material comparison at a glance
| Variant | Structure | Barrier | Typical application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard transparent | OPP30 / PE30 | crystal clear, stiff | Confectionery, pralines, sweets |
| Premium barrier | PET12 / PE | tear- & aroma-resistant | Baked goods, longer best-before |
| Light barrier | OPP / metallised / PE | aroma + light ~100% | Crisps, snacks, premium confectionery |
Custom adaptation — printing and special sizes
Sealed edge bags with brand printing in gravure quality are premium packaging for food brands.
Printing process
Printing in gravure with up to 10 colours, including Pantone spot colours, metallic effects and partial varnish. High-resolution product display in photo quality is possible.
Special sizes and additional features
Format adaptations in width (50–300 mm) and height (60–400 mm). Optionally with a Euro hole, tear notch, aroma valve or zip closure.
Minimum quantity and delivery time we clarify individually after your enquiry, from print approval. Submit an enquiry.
Sustainability and the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR)
Sealed edge bags made from mono-OPP or mono-PE laminate are mono-material and PPWR-compliant from 2030.
Mono-OPP for single-type recycling
Pure OPP sealed edge bags can be recovered in the PP recycling stream. NIR detection in sorting plants supports correct classification.
Mono-PE variants in development
For higher barrier requirements we offer PE/EVOH/PE sealed edge bags, recyclable in the PE stream. EVOH content < 5%, RecyClass-compliant.
Metallised variants and PPWR
Vacuum-metallised films (no solid aluminum) are, under the current PPWR interpretation, still recoverable in material recycling, provided the metal layer remains below 0.1 microns. We advise on the correct material selection.
Recyclate processing
For secondary packaging without direct food contact we process post-consumer recyclate up to a 30% share.
Frequently asked questions about sealed edge bags
What is a sealed edge bag?
A bag heat-sealed with a sealed edge on three sides. The fourth side is open for filling. After filling, the bag is sealed with a film sealer. Synonyms: weld bags, vacuum bags, heat-seal bags.
Suitable for vacuuming?
Yes – optimal for professional chamber vacuum sealers. For home vacuum sealers with a suction nozzle you need bags with an embossed structure (embossed vacuum bags) – available as a custom order.
Which material for vacuuming?
PA/PE laminate film with an oxygen barrier layer is standard for vacuuming. Pure LDPE film without a barrier layer is not vacuum-capable.
How do I seal sealed edge bags?
With a film sealer (impulse or bar sealer). Sealing time at 70 microns typically 3–4 seconds, at 100 microns 4–5 seconds. Before production, test 2–3 trial weld seams.
Food-grade?
Yes – certified to EU 10/2011. For sausage, cheese, meat, additional LFGB conformity on request. → food-grade variant.
Which wall thickness for sausage and cheese?
Standard 70–100 microns. For longer vacuum shelf life (over 6 weeks) or freezer-proof use, thicker (100–150 microns).
Boil-proof for sous-vide?
Standard PA/PE laminate is suitable for boiling up to approx. 85 °C – ideal for classic sous-vide. For higher temperatures, request the cook-in variant.
Which sizes are common?
Small (100×150 mm) to large (300×500 mm). For industry, larger formats also on request.
For sterilisation in a clinic?
Standard sealed edge bags are not autoclavable. For clinical sterilisation, request special sterilisation bags (TYVEK®-based).
Are the bags boil-proof?
Standard up to approx. 85 °C (sous-vide). For higher temperatures (pasteurisation, hot water bath) choose the cook-in variant with PET/PE laminate.
For oxygen-sensitive foods?
Yes – the barrier layer of the PA/PE laminate film reliably blocks oxygen for weeks. Ideal for aroma- and oxidation-sensitive contents.
Printable with a logo?
Yes – flexographic, gravure or digital print as part of a custom order. For premium brands with variety labelling, brand print.
Recyclable?
PA/PE laminate films are not single-type recyclable – multi-layer material. For sustainable mono-material vacuum bags, talk to us for advice.
Suitable for home vacuum sealers with a suction nozzle?
Standard sealed edge bags are not – you need embossed-pattern vacuum bags for suction vacuum sealers. Available as a custom order.
