What are stand-up pouches with an aluminum inner layer?

Stand-up pouches with an aluminum inner layer – also called aluminum doypacks, aluminum stand-up pouches or ALU bags – are the premium construction with an aluminum barrier foil worked in between the composite layers. This aluminum foil blocks almost 100 % of UV radiation, oxygen and moisture – the three main causes of aroma loss in sensitive foods.

Unlike standard composite films (PET/PE without aluminum), aluminum inner-layer bags offer maximum aroma and light protection. They are the premium choice for specialty coffee with an SCA rating of 88+, tea producers with delicate varieties and spice specialities such as saffron or cardamom.

Construction: an outer shell of printable film (PET, kraft paper or composite), an aluminum barrier foil of 7–9 microns inside, an inner PE seal layer for a tight seal. The stand function comes from a built-in bottom gusset – the bag opens out into a stable stance when filled. Certified food-grade to EU 10/2011.

Long aroma preservation of 12–18 months in unopened packaging makes aluminum stand-up pouches the standard choice for brands with supra-regional distribution and longer storage times.

What are aluminum stand-up pouches used for?

Aluminum stand-up pouches are the premium choice wherever maximum aroma and light protection is needed – typical for the highest-quality food applications.

  • Specialty-coffee roasters for SCA 88+ beans with the longest possible aroma preservation (single origin, micro lot, fermented roasts)
  • Premium tea producers for aroma-sensitive varieties (Earl Grey, oolong, pu-erh, matcha, Japanese sencha)
  • Spice specialities with a high value-to-weight ratio (saffron, cardamom, vanilla, sumac, pepper variety blends)
  • Superfood powders with delicate active ingredients (matcha powder, spirulina, maca, lucuma, açaí)
  • Premium cocoa and chocolate makers for single-origin cocoa powder and couverture
  • Premium dried fruit and nuts with high-quality oily contents (cashews, almonds, walnut mixes with essential oils)

Anyone who has once compared the aroma preservation of an aluminum composite with a standard composite chooses only aluminum stand-up pouches for premium products from then on.

Which aluminum stand-up pouches suit your product?

The right variant depends on the product, brand positioning and sales format.

  • With aroma valve for freshly roasted coffee – the one-way pressure valve lets CO₂ escape but blocks oxygen (a must in the specialty-coffee scene)
  • With zip closure for private storage after opening – repeated removal without aroma loss
  • With a transparent window for content presentation at the sales shelf (beans visible, aluminum barrier only in the opaque part)
  • Size classes: 100 g for a sample/trial format, 250 g classic, 500 g and 1 kg for a family format or café needs
  • Printing options: flexographic printing for multi-colour designs, gravure printing for a premium look, digital printing for standard quantities under 1,000 units
  • Outer material: crystal-clear or coloured film for modern brands, alternatively kraft-paper outside with an aluminum inside for an organic and artisan look

Advantages of aluminum stand-up pouches over other constructions

The aluminum inner layer offers the highest barrier effect of all packaging materials – an almost 100 % UV barrier, a 50–100× better oxygen barrier than standard composite. For brands with a premium ambition for aroma-sensitive contents, it is non-negotiable.

The free-standing doypack construction offers POS advantages over flat coffee bags: a stable presentation on the sales shelf, an elegant look, an easily printable front. It combines a functional aroma barrier with brand impact at the point of sale.

Durability: 12–18 months of aroma preservation unopened with correct storage. After opening, a premium aroma level remains for another 4–6 weeks with a zip closure. A declaration of conformity to EU 10/2011 supports compliant placing on the market.

Frequently asked questions about aluminum stand-up pouches

Why do I need an aluminum inner layer for coffee and tea?

Aluminum foil blocks almost 100 % of UV radiation, oxygen and moisture – the three main causes of aroma loss in coffee and tea. Compared with standard composite films without aluminum, aluminum bags typically preserve the aroma 2–3× longer. For specialty coffee with an SCA 88+ rating, the aluminum barrier is practically indispensable.

Are aluminum stand-up pouches certified food-grade?

Yes, all aluminum stand-up pouches in our range are certified to EU 10/2011 for direct food contact. The aluminum foil lies inside between the layers and does not come into direct contact with the contents – the inner PE layer is food-grade. A declaration of conformity is supplied on request, often additionally with LFGB conformity.

Can I get aluminum stand-up pouches with an aroma valve?

Yes, the aroma valve is a common add-on for aluminum stand-up pouches, especially for coffee. The one-way pressure valve lets CO₂ from fresh roasts escape but blocks oxygen from outside. Absolutely recommended for freshly roasted coffee – without a valve the bag bursts within hours from CO₂ pressure.

Which standard sizes are available?

Classic standard sizes: 100 g (90×180 mm), 250 g (130×220 mm), 500 g (160×270 mm) and 1 kg (200×330 mm). For a sample format also 50 g (70×150 mm). Special sizes outside this standard grid are produced as custom production with an individual minimum quantity.

Are aluminum composite films recyclable?

Aluminum composite films cannot currently be recycled by type, as the material consists of several bonded layers. In Germany they currently go to residual or thermal recovery. For a more sustainable brand positioning there are monomaterial alternatives with a high-barrier film – see sustainable stand-up pouches and the recyclable variant.

How do I print aluminum stand-up pouches with my logo?

Printing is done on the outside – not directly on the aluminum layer. Standard printing processes are flexographic printing (cost-effective for several colours), gravure printing (premium quality for larger runs) and digital printing (for small runs under 1,000 units). Minimum quantities and costs vary by process – we calculate individually.

What wall thickness do the bags have?

Standard composite wall thickness is typically 90–130 microns. The aluminum inner layer is a thin 7–9 microns; the rest consists of PET (outside, printable) and PE (inside, the food-grade seal layer). For particularly robust applications or heavy contents, available up to a 150 microns composite thickness.

Are the bags suitable for freezing?

Yes, aluminum composite films are cold-resistant down to approx. −40 °C. For classic freezing in domestic freezers (−18 °C) they can be used without problems. With repeated freeze-thaw cycles the outer film can become brittle, but the aluminum protection is retained.

What advantages over standard composite doypacks?

Aluminum composite has a significantly higher barrier effect against oxygen (50–100× better) and an almost 100 % UV barrier. Standard composite (PET/PE without aluminum) is cheaper and sufficient for many applications, but slowly lets oxygen through. For premium brands in the specialty sector (coffee, tea, spices) it is non-negotiable.

How long do unopened bags preserve the aroma?

In unopened packaging with correct sealing, the aluminum protection stays intact for several years – the aroma preservation of the contents is then limited only by the product itself. For coffee typically a 12–18 month best-before date, for tea 24–36 months. After opening, 4–6 weeks is optimal with resealable variants.

Can I combine bags with a window and aluminum protection?

Yes – bags with a transparent window and an aluminum inside are available. The window is made of crystal-clear film worked into the aluminum composite – the aluminum barrier is missing there, while the rest of the bag remains fully protected. For maximum aroma protection we recommend fully opaque aluminum bags.
