What are sports nutrition and supplement packaging?

Supplement packaging consists of specialised large powder pouches with a resealable function for protein powder, pre-workout blends, BCAA powder, creatine, vitamin powder, plant protein, casein blends and all other sports-nutrition ranges in powder form.

The main requirements are large volumes (1–5 kg standard sizes), a resealable function (everyday sport with multiple daily openings), an aroma barrier (flavours such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry must not escape), a powder-tight seal seam (no leakage of fine-powder contents) and a visual marketing layout (sports brands need eye-catching packaging).

Typical materials: PET/AL/LDPE for a high aluminum barrier with aroma-active powders, mono-PE with EVOH barrier for PPWR-compliant solutions, stand-up pouches with zip closure as the main construction, optionally with an aroma valve for particularly aroma-active pre-workout blends.

All materials are certified to EU 10/2011 and the EU food-information regulation (FIC). Declaration of conformity (PIM) on request.

What is sports nutrition packaging suitable for?

  • Whey protein and casein: stand-up pouches with zip in 1 kg / 2.5 kg / 5 kg for standard whey and casein packaging with an aluminum composite.
  • Plant protein (soy, pea, rice): mono-PE stand-up pouches with zip for sustainable plant-protein brands with PPWR compliance.
  • Pre-workout blends: aroma-active stand-up pouches with valve for particularly intense aroma varieties such as coffee boost or beta-alanine blends.
  • BCAAs and amino acids: small to medium stand-up pouches with zip for 300–500 g portion sizes.
  • Creatine and powder supplements: aluminum stand-up pouches for maximum light protection with UV-sensitive active ingredients.
  • Vitamin and mineral powders: medium stand-up pouches with a write-on panel for batch information.
  • Sports bars and multipacks: flat bags and adhesion-seal poly bags as secondary packaging for sports-bar ranges.

Which supplement packaging variants are available?

The choice of supplement packaging depends on powder sensitivity, portion size and brand positioning:

Material properties of supplement packaging in detail

Supplement packaging requires an aroma barrier, a resealable function and a powder-tight seal seam. The material choice depends on powder sensitivity, best-before-date requirements and brand positioning.

PET12 / AL7 / LDPE110 — high aluminum barrier

Three-layer composite of PET (print side), a 7 microns aluminum barrier layer and an LDPE seal layer. OTR < 0.1 cm³/m²·24h, WVTR < 0.1 g/m²·24h, a complete aroma and light barrier. The standard for whey protein, creatine and pre-workout with a best-before date up to 24+ months.

PE / EVOH / PE — recyclable mono-PE

A monomaterial composite on a polyethylene basis with a thin EVOH barrier layer (< 5 % share). OTR approx. 1–3 cm³/m²·24h — sufficient for plant protein and standard supplements with a best-before date up to 18 months. PPWR-compliant from 2030.

Kraft paper / AL7 / LDPE — organic look with a high barrier

Kraft-paper outside (natural or dyed), an aluminum barrier layer, a PE inner layer. An artisan feel with a high barrier. Popular for plant-protein and organic supplement brands with a sustainable brand strategy.

Zip-closure mechanism

A double-lip PE zip for repeated opening and closing. Everyday sport with daily opening is no problem — a 30–50 cycle service life. On request, a slider variant (slide closure) for particularly quick opening.

Aroma valve — for aroma-active powders

A PP aroma valve with a silicone membrane for pre-workout blends with beta-alanine or coffee-boost components. It lets aroma pressure escape and blocks oxygen ingress. Not needed for normal whey protein.

Food-grade and FIC

All materials are certified to EU 10/2011 and the FIC for direct food contact. Declaration of conformity (PIM) with every order on request. Migration test reports available for particularly sensitive pre-workout active ingredients.

Custom adaptation — supplement branding, flavour layout, aroma valve

Supplement packaging is a brand carrier in sports marketing — the packaging look distinguishes mass-market brands from premium specialty ranges and directly determines shelf impact.

Printing processes

Printing in gravure printing with up to 10 colours, including Pantone spot colours, metallic effects (gold, silver, neon for premium sports brands) and partial high-gloss or soft-touch varnish. High-resolution photo display of athletes, motion visualisations and flavour staging.

Flavour layout

For supplement brands with several flavours we design colour-coded packaging lines: chocolate (brown-black), vanilla (cream-gold), strawberry (pink-red), banana (yellow), cookies-and-cream (brown-white). A standardised layout structure with variable colouring.

Special sizes and aroma valve

Format adaptations freely selectable for 300 g / 500 g / 1 kg / 2.5 kg / 5 kg standard powder formats. Optional aroma-valve integration for aroma-active pre-workout ranges. Optional reinforced bottom-gusset depth for particularly heavy 5 kg powder bulk packs.

Minimum run and delivery time

We clarify the minimum quantity for custom production individually following your enquiry. For several flavours, a combined minimum quantity on request, across all varieties. Delivery time on request. Submit an enquiry.

Sustainability — supplement packaging and PPWR migration

The supplement industry faces PPWR migration: aluminum composites will only be permitted after 2030 within the framework of technical exemptions. We support supplement brands through the transition to sustainable packaging solutions.

Mono-PE for standard supplements

For supplements with a best-before date up to 18 months (plant protein, BCAA powder, standard creatine), mono-PE is the future-proof solution. NIR-detectable in the PE stream, compliant with the RecyClass design guideline, PPWR-compliant from 2030.

Aluminum composites after 2030

For aroma-sensitive premium supplements (pre-workout with coffee boost, UV-sensitive vitamins), aluminum composites remain technically without an equivalent replacement. The PPWR provides for technical exemptions here, albeit with extended recycling obligations for those placing products on the market.

Organic and plant-protein brands

Plant-protein brands often have a strong sustainability commitment. For this brand group, kraft-paper stand-up pouches with a mono-PE inner layer are the optimal solution — an artisan organic look plus PPWR compliance.

Hybrid range strategy

We recommend supplement brands a hybrid range strategy: premium pre-workout in an aluminum composite, standard whey and plant protein in mono-PE. This keeps the brand positioning in the premium segment while the mass-market packaging becomes PPWR-compliant.

Material efficiency in the bulk-quantity range

For 5 kg powder bulk packs, optimal material dimensioning is the greatest lever for material reduction. Advice on bag-size optimisation for your standard portion sizes on request. 80 microns instead of 110 microns saves 27 % of material.

Frequently asked questions about sports nutrition and supplement packaging

Which size for standard whey protein?

Standard whey protein is sold in 1 kg, 2.5 kg and 5 kg large formats. 1 kg in format 200×320 mm, 2.5 kg in 260×400 mm, 5 kg in 320×500 mm. Stand-up pouches with zip closure made of aluminum composite for a 24+ month best-before date.

Aluminum vs. mono-PE — which one when?

Aluminum composite for aroma-active and UV-sensitive powders with a best-before date > 18 months (whey protein, creatine, pre-workout with vitamin C). Mono-PE for plant protein and standard supplements with a best-before date up to 18 months — PPWR-compliant and sustainable.

Do I need an aroma valve?

For pre-workout blends with beta-alanine or coffee-boost components: yes — an aroma valve prevents a build-up of internal pressure from degrading aroma substances. For normal whey protein and standard supplements: no, an aroma valve is not needed.

How securely does the zip closure hold?

Zip closures last 30–50 opening/closing cycles without loss of function. With daily opening in everyday sport, that corresponds to 1–2 months of service life — sufficient for a standard whey pack. The powder stays fresh and moisture-free thanks to the zip closure.

Is printing with a supplement brand logo possible?

Yes — gravure printing with up to 10 colours, including Pantone spot colours, metallic effects and partial high-gloss or soft-touch varnish. Sports brands often use striking colours (black, neon, metallic) for shelf impact. Minimum quantity on request.

Is FIC-compliant printing possible?

Yes — we design the packaging to be FIC-compliant with an ingredient list (ingredients in descending order of quantity), a nutrition table per portion and per 100 g, allergen information, the best-before date, the recommended intake and notes on a balanced diet.

Which packaging for plant protein?

Plant-protein brands often opt for mono-PE composites with a kraft-paper look — combining a sustainable material choice with an artisan organic look. Sustainable stand-up pouches are the standard for this.

Are there compostable supplement packaging options?

On request, kraft-paper/PLA composites are industrially compostable to EN 13432. Possible with pure protein powders that have a low fat content. Not recommended for pre-workout with essential aromas (PLA degrades with aromatic substances).

Which size for BCAAs and amino acids?

BCAAs and amino acids are sold in 300 g, 500 g and 1 kg portion sizes. 300 g in 140×220 mm, 500 g in 160×270 mm, 1 kg in 200×320 mm. Stand-up pouches with zip closure made of aluminum composite for a 24+ month best-before date.

Can packaging be ordered with a window?

On request — a window is less often requested for supplement packaging, since aroma and light protection matter more than a visual powder presentation. Possible on request for premium plant-protein brands with an attractive powder colour (e.g. spirulina green).

Is the packaging PPWR-compliant?

Mono-PE stand-up pouches are monomaterial-recyclable in the PE stream and meet the EU Packaging Regulation from 2030. Aluminum composites fall under PPWR exemptions for aroma-sensitive and UV-sensitive powders with a best-before date > 18 months.

Do you send samples before ordering?

Yes — we send samples of all standard sizes before you order. Custom production (printing, special sizes, aroma valve) on request via the contact form.
