What are side gusset bags for coffee?
Side gusset bags for coffee are the classic premium packaging of the roastery sector. They combine the side gusset (for volume and stand-up capability) with a multi-layer laminate film of PET, aluminum and PE that acts as a high barrier. Aluminum is the gold standard for aroma protection – no other cost-efficient material combination keeps the volatile aroma compounds inside the bag so reliably.
In the coffee sector, the side gusset design has the advantage over stand-up pouches (doypacks) that it is considerably more cost-efficient to produce and better suited to machine filling. For roasters with high production volumes it has therefore been the industry standard for decades. On the shelf they stand in a box-like shape and convey the classic coffee brand feel that many end customers associate with high-quality roasted coffee.
Our range of side gusset bags for coffee covers the typical fill volumes from 125 g (sample packs) to 1 kg (hospitality and family packs). Laminate film with an aluminum layer is standard, optionally with an aroma protection valve for the CO2 degassing of freshly roasted beans, with or without a zip closure for resealability. Food safety to EU 10/2011 is standard, and they are printable with an individual brand design. For sustainable brands we offer EVOH high-barrier or mono-material variants as a recyclable alternative.

Your advantages with coffee side gusset bags from Elke Plastic
We have imported premium packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For coffee roasters this means: aluminum laminate films with reliable aroma protection on terms normally reserved for international brands. At the same time we keep standard sizes in stock, so that even smaller craft roasters and single-origin brands can start without large print runs.
Our packaging specialists know the specific requirements of freshly roasted coffees: which aluminum structure stays reliably sealed? How is the aroma protection valve fitted correctly? Which print finishes are compatible with the escaping CO2? We help you make the right choice from the outset – instead of learning from market complaints.
Shipping is from our German warehouse. Coffee standard sizes are usually in stock; for custom printing the delivery window is agreed individually. No minimum order value. Roasters and all customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive graduated prices. Free samples for aroma testing are a matter of course.
Frequently asked questions about coffee side gusset bags
Why are side gusset bags so widely used for coffee?
They are cost-efficient to produce, lend themselves well to machine filling and stand stably on the shelf in a box-like shape. Their laminate film with an aluminum layer offers maximum aroma protection. For decades the industry standard for roasted coffee packaging.
Do I need an aroma protection valve?
For freshly roasted beans: yes. Freshly roasted coffee releases CO2 for 24–72 hours – without a valve the bag swells up or the roastery has to wait, which costs aroma. For degassed coffee or long storage, a valve is not necessary.
How do side gusset and block bottom differ for coffee?
Block bottom bags have a rectangular, fixed base and stand up immediately. Side gusset bags have to expand when filled. For high-speed machine filling, side gusset bags are more efficient. For premium shelf presentation, block bottom bags are more stable.
Which aluminum thickness?
9–12 microns is standard, 12–20 microns for premium. An aluminum layer that is too thin reduces the aroma barrier, while one that is too thick makes the bag stiffer and more expensive.
With or without a zip closure?
In the consumer segment it is standard today – end customers open the pack several times. For high-consumption hospitality, going without a zip can be more cost-efficient. For specialty coffee with tasting ambitions, a zip is essential.
Which fill size is standard?
In the consumer segment, 250 g and 500 g. Specialty coffee often opts for 125–250 g to underline the freshness message. Hospitality and office coffee, 500 g–1 kg.
How long does packaged coffee keep?
With an aluminum laminate and valve, typically 12–18 months unopened. After opening, coffee should be used within 2–4 weeks, and ground coffee sooner (1–2 weeks).
Can the bags be disposed of in recycling?
Classic aluminum laminate bags are only of limited recyclability (residual waste). For recyclability we offer mono-material or EVOH high-barrier variants.
What quantities should I order?
Stock items in standard sizes are available from the warehouse. Custom printing pays off from larger runs. For craft roasters we recommend standard bags with labels plus a switch to custom printing on request.
Can I print organic logos on the bags?
Yes, provided the relevant certificates are in place. The EU organic logo, the Fairtrade label and others can be printed. For premium brands we recommend matte combinations.
Are sustainable coffee side gusset bags available?
Yes, EVOH high-barrier without aluminum and mono-material variants are available. For organic roasters with a recycling focus, these are a visible choice. The aroma barrier is slightly lower than with an aluminum laminate.
Which film thickness is optimal?
Standard coffee films have a total thickness of 80–120 microns. For premium applications, up to 150 microns. For mono-material variants, typically 100–140 microns.
