What are large flat bags?
Large flat bags are the format variant for all applications where standard sizes below 300×400 mm are not enough. Our large-format bags start at 300×400 mm (around A3 format) and go up to 600×800 mm (bulk packs). They typically consist of LDPE film in medium to high film thicknesses (70–100 microns), since large bags, by virtue of their contents, more often carry heavy or bulky filling goods.
The range of applications is varied: family portions in the frozen segment (large lettuce heads, family dried fruit, whole chickens), textile shipping in online retail (jumpers, jackets, blankets), industrial component packaging (medium-sized components, long shafts), shipping of bulky small-goods ranges (toy sets, cosmetics multi-packs). Wherever the contents are too large for standard formats, large-format flat bags are the right choice.
Our range of large-format flat bags covers typical industrial and food requirements: standard sizes such as 300×400 mm, 400×500 mm, 400×600 mm, 500×700 mm and 600×800 mm. Film thicknesses of 70–90 microns are usual, and 100 microns for extreme loads. All standard LDPE flat bags are food-grade to EU 10/2011. On request with a Euro hole for hanging display, or without for pure packaging use. Special formats are easily possible from a larger run.

Your benefits with large flat bags from Elke Plastic
We have imported packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For large-format flat bags, material quality is particularly important: over large film surfaces, any unevenness in the layer thickness immediately shows up as a weak point. Our suppliers meet the strict requirements for consistent film quality in large formats too.
Our packaging specialists advise on the right combination of size and film thickness: for textile shipping, 70 microns is usually enough; for sharp-edged industrial components, 90 microns is the minimum requirement; for heavy goods, 100 microns. For specific requirements (antistatic, corrosion protection, food-grade) we direct you to the right variant.
Shipping is from our German warehouse. Large-format standard sizes are usually in stock; individual special sizes are scheduled accordingly. Ordering smaller quantities: no minimum order value. B2B customers and online retailers receive tiered prices for carton and pallet quantities. Free samples for material testing are a matter of course.
Frequently asked questions about large flat bags
From what size does a flat bag count as “large”?
We define large format as from 300×400 mm (about A3 format). Below that we speak of standard and small formats. This boundary has emerged from practical use: from 300×400 mm, packaging and shipping processes often require changed workflows.
Do I automatically need a stronger film for large bags?
Not necessarily, but usually yes. Large formats often hold heavier or bulkier filling goods that require corresponding tear resistance. For light filling goods (e.g. wool jumpers) 70 microns is enough; for heavy or sharp-edged contents 90–100 microns makes sense.
Are large formats more expensive than small bags?
Yes, film consumption is linearly greater. A 600×800 mm bag uses about 4 times as much film as a 300×400 mm bag. At the same film thickness, the price is correspondingly higher. For efficiency it is worth choosing the optimally fitting size – don't over-dimension.
Can large bags be shipped via DHL?
Yes, provided the packaging meets the maximum DHL dimensions. Standard parcels are permitted up to 120 cm in length. For higher volumes or lengths, forwarder shipping makes sense. Large formats without additional outer packaging make sense for robust, non-fragile contents (e.g. textiles).
Are the bags food-grade?
Yes, all standard LDPE flat bags in our range are food-grade to EU 10/2011. In large formats too.
Which size is standard for online textile shipping?
400×500 mm for jumpers and medium-sized textiles. 400×600 mm for trousers and larger items. 500×700 mm for jackets and multi-item consignments. For outerwear specialists, a standard size as the main format is often worthwhile.
Are the bags also available transparent?
Yes, all large formats are available in transparent standard LDPE film. For shipping applications requiring discretion, there are sometimes also milky or printed variants.
Can the bags be printed with a logo?
Yes, individual printing in flexo print. For large-format bags, printing is especially worthwhile – the large surface makes brand branding visible. For smaller runs, labelling with self-adhesive labels is usually the flexible alternative.
Do the bags withstand heavy goods?
70 microns: up to 5 kg. 90 microns: up to 10 kg. 100 microns: up to 15 kg (depending on bottom construction and contents geometry). For extreme loads, side gusset sacks with a reinforced bottom are better suited.
Do I need special formats?
If standard sizes are 10–20% over-dimensioned, standard with adhesive-tape folding is often the more efficient solution. Special formats are worthwhile from a larger run – we advise on order quantity calculations.
Are sustainable large formats available?
Yes, PCR-recycled and mono-material variants are available in the common large formats. For shipping brands with a sustainability positioning, the sustainable choice is a visible brand signal.
