What are paper carrier bags?
Paper carrier bags are the sustainable alternative to plastic carrier bags. They consist of sturdy kraft paper (or natron kraft for premium applications) with twisted-in or sewn-in handles. Since the ban on conventional plastic carrier bags in the EU, they have been the standard for bricks-and-mortar retail – fashion boutiques, organic shops, pharmacies, booksellers. But they are also the right choice for direct sales and gift packaging.
The paper bag has a few technical properties that determine the material choice: kraft paper is sturdier than standard paper, can be printed, is recyclable in the waste paper stream and biodegradable. For moist or greasy contents (fresh baked goods, meat in plastic pre-packaging), PE-coated inner sides are available. For premium brands we recommend natron kraft with a finer fibre, which prints better and looks more refined.

Frequently asked questions about paper carrier bags
Which paper is standard?
Kraft paper is the most cost-efficient choice. For premium applications we recommend natron kraft (finer fibre, prints better, looks more refined). For organic brands, natural brown unbleached kraft paper.
How heavily can I load them?
Standard paper bags safely hold 5–7 kg. Premium variants with twisted paper handles 8–10 kg. For heavy orders (book sets, multiple fashion purchases) we recommend larger formats with a reinforced base.
Which handle variant is the most robust?
Twisted paper handles are the most robust (highest load capacity). Flat handles are cost-efficient with good load capacity. Cord handles have a premium look with sufficient load capacity.
Are the bags waterproof?
Pure paper is not waterproof. For moist or rain-resistant applications we recommend PE-coated inner sides. For direct sale of baked goods there are food-grade coated variants.
Can the bags be printed?
Yes, in letterpress or flexographic printing. Run-dependent prices. For smaller runs, logo stickers or brand labels are a flexible alternative.
Are the bags recyclable?
Pure kraft paper is recyclable in the waste paper stream. With a PE inner coating they are recyclable to a limited extent. For full recyclability we recommend pure paper without a coating.
Are the bags biodegradable?
Pure kraft paper biodegrades. With a PE inner coating, only the paper outer component. For industrially compostable variants there are special PLA-coated inner sides (DIN EN 13432).
Which printing processes are common?
Letterpress is standard for 1–3-colour designs. Flexographic printing for elaborate multi-colour prints. Gravure printing for high-gloss premium designs. We advise on run calculations and printing processes.
Which size is standard in fashion?
240×100×320 mm is the standard fashion carrier bag. For premium fashion boutiques 320×150×420 mm. For jewellery and accessories 180×80×220 mm.
Which run makes sense?
Stock items in standard sizes are available from the warehouse. Custom printing becomes worthwhile from larger runs. For fashion boutiques with their own logo we recommend runs from 1,000–2,000 units.
Do the bags hold up for shipping?
No. Paper carrier bags are not suitable for shipping – they are optimised for bricks-and-mortar retail. For shipping applications we recommend flat bags with a self-adhesive closure.
Are sustainable organic paper bags available?
Yes, FSC-certified kraft paper is standard. For organic brands we recommend natural brown kraft paper with unbleached handles. Mineral-oil-free printing inks for full recyclability.
