What is spice packaging?
Spice packaging refers to specialised bags for dried spices, blends, salts and powders. They must meet three key requirements:
- Light-proof – UV light bleaches colour pigments and destroys essential oils
- Moisture-proof – spices attract moisture and clump together
- Aroma protection – volatile aromatic compounds must not escape, and foreign odours must not get in
For this reason, spice packaging is usually made with an aluminum composite inner layer. In addition, these bags usually have a zip closure for repeated dispensing, or are heat-sealable for longer storage. For presentation purposes, versions with a window are available.
What is spice packaging used for?
- Spice trade: classic spices, blends, exotic spices, curry powders
- Organic & wholefoods: organic spices, single-origin, Demeter quality
- Speciality producers: hand-blended spice creations with a story
- Salts: fleur de sel, Himalayan salt, smoked salts
- BBQ & grill: rubs, marinade blends, steak spices
- Asian cuisine: curry pastes, sambals, exotic blends
- Bakery: baking spice blends, bread spice, gingerbread spice
- Tea producers: chai tea blends with a spice component
- Private gifts: self-blended spices as a present

Material properties of spice packaging in detail
Spice packaging requires an aroma barrier against essential oils and a light barrier against UV degradation. The material composite determines flavour retention and best-before date.
PET12 / AL7 / LDPE110 — aluminum high barrier
The standard composite for aroma-sensitive spices: pepper, cinnamon, curry, garam masala, cardamom. OTR < 0.1 cm³/m²·24h, complete aroma and light barrier. Best-before date of up to 24 months possible.
Kraft paper / AL7 / LDPE — artisan look
Kraft paper outer (natural or coloured), aluminum barrier layer, PE inner. A handcrafted feel with a high barrier. Popular for organic brands, spice producers and premium lines.
PE / EVOH / PE — mono-PE for standard spices
A monomaterial composite for spices with moderate aroma requirements: paprika, salt blends, herbal tea blends. OTR approx. 1–3 cm³/m²·24h, best-before date of up to 12 months. NIR-detectable in the PE stream.
Transparent films
For salts, sugar blends, dried herbs with visual presentation. Limited light barrier — suitable for UV-tolerant spices and packaging with a secondary carton.
Food-grade certification
All materials are certified in accordance with EU 10/2011 and LMIV. Declaration of conformity (PIM) on request. Migration tests for sensitive spices (with essential oils) available on request.
Custom adaptation — bag shapes, printing and sizes
Spice packaging is produced in a wide variety of bag shapes and brand printing — from the 10 g sample bag to the 1 kg catering bag.
Bag shapes
Stand-up pouches with a bottom gusset, side gusset bags with tin tie, flat bags with a zipper, block bottom and cross bottom bags for handcrafted packaging. Material composite and bag shape can be freely combined.
Printing processes
Printing in rotogravure with up to 10 colours, including Pantone spot colours, metallic effects and spot varnish. High-resolution spice photography and mandatory information under LMIV are designed together.
Custom sizes and additional features
Format adjustments freely selectable in width (60–250 mm) and height (90–400 mm) for fill contents of 10 g to 1 kg. Optionally with an aroma protection valve (for active spices such as pepper), resealable zipper or window.

Sustainability — spice packaging and the PPWR
The EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) also affects the spice sector: aluminum high-barrier composites will only be permitted from 2030 within the scope of technical exemptions.
Mono-PE for standard spices
Spices with moderate aroma requirements (paprika, salt blends, dried herbs) can be packaged in mono-PE with sufficient shelf life. NIR-recyclable, RecyClass-compliant.
High barrier for aroma-sensitive premium spices
Specialty spices (fresh pepper, premium curry blends, herbs with active essential oils) remain dependent on an aluminum barrier. PPWR exemptions from 2030 with extended recycling obligations for those placing products on the market.
Compostable options
Kraft paper/PLA composites in accordance with EN 13432 for direct marketers and farm shops with quick spice turnover. Not suitable for online retail requiring a long best-before date.
Reduced material use
For standard packaging, we examine material reduction through thinner films on request — typical savings of 15–20% with the same function.
Frequently asked questions about spice packaging
Why are spices particularly sensitive?
Spices contain essential oils that quickly dissipate when exposed to light, oxygen and heat. Aluminum composite packaging with a light barrier is the best protection.
Which material protects best?
Aluminum composite is the gold standard – a near-100% UV barrier, oxygen- and moisture-proof. Essential for the most sensitive spices such as saffron and cardamom.
With or without a zip?
For end-consumer home kitchens, always with a zip (opening repeatedly without losing aroma). For industrial primary packaging, also available without a zip using heat sealing.
Which format is standard?
A stand-up pouch with a zip is the premium standard. Block bottom bags for an artisan look. Ziplock bags for the classic zip application.
Which size for 50 g of pepper?
Approx. 80×120 mm stand-up pouch. For 100 g, 100×150 mm. For 250 g, 130×220 mm. For 500 g, 160×270 mm.
Suitable for organic spices?
Yes – kraft paper formats with an aroma barrier combine an organic look with functional protection. → Kraft paper block bottom bags.
With a window for premium brands?
Yes → Block bottom bags with window or stand-up pouches with a window. The spice is visible behind a crystal-clear window, with an aluminum barrier behind it.
Printable with mandatory information under LMIV?
Yes – with logo, spice name, ingredients, allergen notices, best-before date field and mandatory information. → Custom production.
Certified food-grade?
Yes – all packaging in accordance with EU 10/2011 and LFGB. Declaration of conformity on request.
How long do spices keep in the packaging?
In aluminum composite packaging, 18–24 months; 3–6 months after opening. For long storage, choose the light-proof version.
Which packaging for spice blends vs. single spices?
Blends benefit particularly from aroma protection – the components interact with the air. For blends, aluminum composite with a zip is ideal.
Suitable for salts?
Yes – salts are less aroma-sensitive but moisture-sensitive. Standard packaging is usually sufficient; for premium salts (fleur de sel, smoked salt), use aluminum composite.
Practical for kitchen storage?
Yes – a stand-up pouch with a zip is ideal: it stands stably on the spice rack, opens repeatedly without aroma loss, and with a logo and variety label it becomes a kitchen treasure.
For private hobby spice blenders?
Yes – we also supply standard quantities with no minimum order. Ideal for hobby spice blenders, BBQ enthusiasts and small market stalls.
