What are food-grade cross bottom bags?
Cross bottom bags are PE film bags (made of LDPE) with a special bottom construction: the bottom is folded in a cross shape and unfolds when filled into a stable standing base. This combines the properties of a flat bag (space-saving flat storage) with the free-standing ability of a doypack. In the food sector they are a classic and cost-efficient solution for direct-sales applications.
Note: cross bottom bags are NOT identical to paper bags! They are made of clear LDPE film, not paper. This makes them waterproof and therefore suitable for moist or greasy food applications where classic kraft paper bags would fail. The transparent film shows the contents directly, while the cross-folded bottom ensures an upright stance on the shelf or at the direct-sales stand.
Our range of food-grade cross bottom bags covers typical direct-sales standard sizes: 250 g, 500 g, 1 kg, 2 kg. LDPE film 30–60 microns, food-grade to EU 10/2011. For direct marketing in the farm shop, bakeries with loosely packed baked goods, mill direct sales and all applications with free-standing LDPE packaging. On request with brand printing or as a natural-look variant.

Your benefits with food cross bottom bags from Elke Plastic
We have been importing packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For cross bottom bags, the film fold quality is decisive: a poorly folded bottom does not open cleanly when filled or stands unstably. Our suppliers meet the requirements for consistent bottom fold quality across the entire production batch.
Our packaging specialists advise on direct-sales applications: for bakeries with fresh baked goods we recommend 30 microns with a window effect (through the transparent film). For mill direct sales you need more robust 50–60 microns. For market traders with their own logo we recommend printed variants as a brand plus.

Frequently asked questions about food cross bottom bags
Are cross bottom bags made of paper?
NO. Cross bottom bags are made of clear PE film (LDPE), not paper. The cross-folded bottom is created by film folding, not by paper gluing. For paper bags we recommend cone bags or kraft paper carrier bags.
What distinguishes a cross bottom from a block bottom?
Cross bottom: a cross-folded bottom from film folding that unfolds when filled. Block bottom: a rectangular, fixed-construction bottom that stands immediately. The cross bottom is cheaper, the block bottom more stable.
Are the bags food-grade?
Yes, EU 10/2011-compliant. Approved for direct food contact.
Which size is standard?
In retail, 500 g and 1 kg are common. For trial portions 250 g. For family and direct-marketing bulk packs 2 kg.
How is the bag closed?
With tape, a heat sealer, a clip band or simply folded over. For market traders, a clip band with a twist closure is widespread – fast, secure, no tools needed.
Are the bags waterproof?
LDPE is splash-proof. They are suitable for moist or greasy foods (fresh bread, cheese, sausage). They are not suitable for liquids directly – without a closure the contents will leak out.
Can the bags be frozen?
Yes, LDPE is cold-resistant down to -40 °C. For frequent freezer use we recommend more robust 50–60 micron variants.
Are the bags breathable?
No. LDPE is not breathable. For applications that require breathability (fresh bread, croissants) we recommend kraft paper bags or adhesion bags with an air hole.
Can the bags be printed with a brand logo?
Yes, individual printing by flexo printing. For bakeries and market traders, own printing is a clear brand plus.
Are sustainable cross bottom bags available?
Yes, PCR-recycled variants in food-grade quality are available. For organic brands these are a visible choice.
Which mandatory declarations are required?
For pre-packed foods with a longer shelf life, the FIC applies: name, ingredients list, net quantity, best-before date, responsible party, allergens. For direct market sales for immediate consumption, this is often simplified.
Do smaller runs make sense?
Yes. Stock items in standard sizes are available from one box. Custom printing pays off from larger runs – we advise on run calculations.
