What is cut-to-size tubular film?

Cut-to-size tubular film is the endless film roll from which you cut off the length you need as required. Unlike pre-cut bags, there is no fixed standard size – every cut is made individually. Using scissors, a cutter or an industrial cutter, the film is brought to the required length and then closed with a heat sealer or adhesive tape.

The advantages are clear: no waste from the wrong standard sizes, exact adaptation to different contents, cost-efficient per metre. For workshops with differently sized profiles, manufacturers with individual product lengths or industrial applications with variable content geometry, cut-to-size tubular film is the optimal solution.

Our cut-to-size tubular film range covers typical applications: tube widths 100–800 mm, film thicknesses 25–200 microns, roll lengths 100–1000 m. LDPE or PA/PE laminate. A food-grade variant is available for food applications.

What is cut-to-size tubular film suitable for?

  • Joineries & timber construction: variable wooden slats and battens
  • Metalworking: steel, aluminum and non-ferrous metal profiles
  • Manufacturers: individual product lengths
  • Hobby workshops: flexible packaging of various contents
  • Warehouse logistics: varying content geometry
  • Food manufacturers: stollen, long loaves, sausage casings

Which cut-to-size variant is the right one?

  • Tube width 100–200 mm: narrow profiles, tools, small parts
  • Tube width 200–400 mm: standard profiles
  • Tube width 400–800 mm: wide profiles, fabric rolls
  • Film thickness 25–50 microns: light contents
  • Film thickness 60–100 microns: standard industry
  • Film thickness 120–200 microns: extra strong for heavy goods
  • LDPE: universal for almost all applications
  • PA/PE laminate: vacuum-capable

Your advantages with cut-to-size tubular film from Elke Plastic

We have imported films directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For cut-to-size tubular film, consistent film quality across the entire roll is crucial: an uneven roll leads to unexpected material faults when cutting. Our suppliers meet the requirements for constant film quality.

Our packaging specialists advise on the right choice of film for each application: for joineries we recommend a 200–400 mm tube width with 50–80 microns. For metalworking workshops, 300–500 mm with 90–120 microns. For food manufacturers, the food-grade variant.

Frequently asked questions about cut-to-size tubular film

How do I cut tubular film to the right length?

Unroll the tubular film from the roll to the desired length, cut straight across with scissors or a cutter, fill it and seal both open ends with a film sealing machine. This turns the endless tube into a perfectly fitting bag in any length you need – with no offcut waste from fixed bag sizes.

Why tubular film instead of ready-made bags?

If your product lengths vary (profiles, pipes, fabric rolls, bars), tubular film saves you stock-keeping and waste: one roll covers many lengths. Ready-made bags only pay off at a constant size and high volumes.

Which sealing device do I need to close them?

An impulse or bar sealer to match the tube width. A handheld sealer is enough for occasional packaging; for production runs we recommend a bar sealer or a continuous sealer. Alternatively, use a bag clip or adhesive tape for non-airtight applications.

Which width/thickness should I choose for self-conversion?

Choose a tube width just over half the circumference of your product (lay-flat width ≈ circumference ÷ 2) and the thickness according to weight/sharp edges (25–50 microns light, 90–200 microns heavy/sharp-edged). This way the bag fits without tension and without puncturing.

How much film do I save compared with ready-made bags?

With varying lengths, often 15–30 %, because there is no need to use oversized standard bags and no offcut waste from size mismatch. The exact figure depends on how widely your product sizes vary.

Is self-cut tubular film food-grade?

With the food-grade LDPE variant, yes – certified to EU 10/2011, declaration of conformity on request. Food suitability depends on the material, not on the cut.

Up to what length can I cut?

Practically unlimited – the roll sets the endless length (often hundreds of metres). This makes it possible to pack even very long profiles or roll goods in one piece.

How do I store opened rolls correctly?

Dry, protected from dust and out of direct sunlight (UV). This keeps the film workable for years; UV and heat accelerate embrittlement.

Is there cut-to-size tubular film without a minimum order quantity?

Yes, as stock items with no minimum order value and graduated prices. Shipped in 1–3 working days from our German warehouse; special quantities and printing on request.
