What are transparent block bottom bags?
Transparent block bottom bags are the clear variant of the classic block bottom construction. Instead of opaque kraft paper or laminate film, clear PE laminates are used – typically PET/PE for standard applications or PA/PE for mechanically more robust requirements. The rectangular block bottom is retained and ensures a stable stance on the shelf, while the transparent shell gives a full view of the packaged product.
The choice between transparent and printed is a fundamental marketing decision. Anyone with a visually appealing product – colourful pasta, bright sweets, glittering confectionery, multi-coloured dried fruits – uses the transparency as their strongest selling point. There is no better marketing than making the product itself visible on the shelf. Food brands whose value derives from appearance and variety have relied on transparent packaging for decades.
Our range of transparent block bottom bags covers fill sizes from 50 g (samplers) to 1 kg (family packs). With or without a zip closure, with or without a Euro hole for hanging presentation, in various film thicknesses for different load requirements. All standard variants are food-grade under EU 10/2011. For maximum recyclability we also offer mono-PE clear bags that can be recycled in the PE stream via the recycling bin after use – slightly milkier in appearance, but sustainable over their life cycle.
What are transparent block bags suitable for?
- Pasta & noodle specialities: colourful displays become a selling point
- Sweets & confectionery: multi-coloured mixes look strongest through transparency
- Dried fruits & nuts: quality and variety directly visible
- Baking ingredients: almonds, pistachios, sesame, kernels with a premium look
- Craft materials: beads, mosaic stones, collector lots with a clear view
- Pet food (premium snacks): visible quality for consumer confidence
Which transparent variant is the right one?
- PET/PE laminate: standard for dry goods, high-gloss, cost-optimised
- PA/PE laminate: mechanically robust, vacuum-capable, slightly milkier
- Mono-PE clear: recyclable in the recycling bin, somewhat softer
- Film thickness 90 microns: standard for light contents
- Film thickness 120–150 microns: more robust applications, sharp-edged contents
- With zip closure: resealability for consumers
- With Euro hole: hanging presentation in retail
- With high-gloss coating: premium look, refined appearance
Your benefits with transparent block bags from Elke Plastic
We have been importing transparent packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For transparent block bags the film quality is especially visible: a film with air inclusions or uneven thickness looks cheap on the shelf and undermines the premium promise. Our suppliers meet the strict requirements for consistent clear-view quality across the entire production batch.
Our packaging specialists advise on material choice and film thickness: should the film be high-gloss or matt? Is PET/PE sufficient or do you need PA/PE robustness? Which zip variant holds up in the consumer's cupboard? We help you choose the right configuration for your product and target group from the outset.
Shipping is from our German warehouse. Transparent block standard sizes are usually in stock; custom printing (part-transparent with a logo stripe) is scheduled individually within the delivery window. All customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive quantity discounts. Free samples for advance checking are a matter of course – test the clear-view quality and closure function before your main order.
Frequently asked questions about transparent block bottom bags
What distinguishes a transparent block bottom bag from a stand-up bag?
The base form: block bottom bags have a rectangular, classic base, stand-up bags a rounded, modern Doypack base. Both stand upright; the block bottom looks traditional, the stand-up base modern. For classic food brands rather block, for specialty brands rather stand-up.
Which film is more transparent – PET/PE or PA/PE?
PET/PE appears somewhat glossier and more rigid, PA/PE slightly milky but mechanically more robust. For a pure shop-window look choose PET/PE, for vacuum or cold-store applications PA/PE.
Are the bags food-grade?
Yes, all standard films are food-grade under EU 10/2011. For specific contents (high-fat, alcoholic) please check the data sheet or contact us.
How do transparent bags perform with UV-sensitive products?
Transparent films barely filter UV. For light-sensitive foods (some vitamins, food colourings, natural dyes) you should choose laminate films with UV protection or use large-area labelling.
Can the bags be disposed of in the recycling bin?
PET/PE and PA/PE are multi-layer laminates and only partly recyclable (mostly residual waste). Mono-PE variants are recyclable via the recycling bin in the PE stream.
With or without a zip closure?
For consumer applications usually sensible – resealability is standard today. For high-throughput hospitality, without a zip can be more cost-effective. For sampler sets a zip is usually not needed.
Which film for vacuum applications?
A PA/PE laminate is the more robust choice for vacuum. Mono-PE and thin PET/PE laminates are not vacuum-capable. For sous-vide or long-term vacuum storage, contact us about special films.
Is printing possible despite transparency?
Yes, partial printing with a logo stripe or label area is standard. Full-area printing loses the effect of the transparency. For brand information, mandatory details and a label area, partial printing is optimal.
Which size is standard in food retail?
For pasta mostly 500 g–1 kg, for confectionery 100–250 g, for dried fruits 150–500 g. The block bottom works in all sizes, although from 1 kg the stand-up base becomes less stable.
Can I vacuum-pack with transparent bags?
With PA/PE variants yes – they are mechanically stable enough. Pure PE mono variants are not suitable for vacuum. For cold-store storage (e.g. cheese, meat) PA/PE is the right choice.
Are smaller runs possible?
Stock items in standard sizes are available from stock. Custom printing becomes worthwhile from larger runs. For tests and sampling we recommend standard stock without printing.
