What is confectionery packaging?
Confectionery packaging covers all packaging variants suitable for sweets, pralines, candies, dried fruits, nuts and comparable snacks. They must be food-grade (EU 10/2011), protect the product from moisture and dust, and at the same time look visually appealing.
Classic formats are cone bags (cone form for sweets, popcorn, street food), flat bags (economical portion packaging), stand-up pouches (stand upright, ideal for presentation) and block bottom bags (box-shaped, high-quality look).
For greasy contents (chocolate) and moist products there is packaging with special inner coatings. For clear visibility you use transparent bags – for presentation with logo printing, stand-up pouches with window work well.

Material properties of confectionery packaging in detail
Confectionery packaging requires high-quality presentation at the point of sale while having a moderate barrier — most sweets have medium best-before requirements and benefit from clear-view packaging.
OPP film 30–40 microns — transparent standard
Crystal-clear polypropylene film with high brilliance for full product visibility. Standard for pralines, confectionery, sweets, wedding assortments, promotional sweets. Printable in flexo or rotogravure.
PET/PE composite — premium transparency
PET on the outside for mechanical stability and printability, PE on the inside for the seal seam. Higher tear resistance than pure OPP, suitable for heavier assortment packaging.
Metallised films — premium look
OPP/metallised/PE composite for glossy silver or gold premium packaging. Vacuum metallisation (no solid aluminum), aroma and light barrier almost 100 %. Popular for praline manufacturers.
Twist-wrap films — the sweet classic
OPP film specially for twist-wrap packaging with defined stiffness. Standard for caramel sweets, individual praline packaging, gift assortments.
Cone bags and cellophane
Classic confectionery packaging from cellophane (regenerated cellulose material) or OPP. Cellophane is compostable and natural, OPP more brilliant and more stable.
Food-grade certification
All materials are certified for direct food contact in accordance with EU 10/2011. Declaration of conformity on request.
Individual customisation — brand look and special sizes
Confectionery packaging is a classic brand carrier — printing and appearance directly determine the purchase decision at the POS.
Printing processes
Printing in rotogravure with up to 10 colours, including Pantone spot colours, metallic effects and partial high-gloss or soft-touch varnish. High-resolution photo rendering with hot-foil embossing possible.
Bag forms and special sizes
Stand-up, block bottom, side gusset and sealed edge bags — bag form and assortment size freely selectable. Standard formats for 100 g / 200 g / 500 g assortments or individual packaging.
Additional features
Zipper, tin-tie, Euro hole, tear notch, window, hot-foil embossing, soft-touch varnish — premium finishing for gift and special editions.

Sustainability — confectionery packaging and the PPWR
The EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) also affects the confectionery industry: multi-material composites with solid aluminum will fall out of material recycling from 2030.
Mono-OPP and mono-PP — PPWR-compliant
Pure OPP and PP confectionery packaging is mono-material recyclable in the PP stream. NIR-detectable, RecyClass-compliant. Already PPWR-compliant from 2030.
Vacuum-metallised films
OPP/metallised/PE composites remain recoverable in material recycling under the current PPWR interpretation, provided the metal layer stays below 0.1 microns and is subordinate in the material ratio.
Compostable cellophane packaging
Genuine cellophane (regenerated cellulose) is industrially compostable in accordance with EN 13432 — a comeback for this classic material for sustainability-oriented confectionery producers. Not to be confused with OPP film, which looks visually similar.
Material reduction
For twist-wrap and individual packaging, we examine thinner film variants: 30 microns instead of 40 microns saves 25 % material with comparable twist stability.
