What are block bottom bags for tea?
Block bottom bags for tea are free-standing packaging bags with a rectangular block bottom and a multi-layer laminate film whose material is specially matched to the demands of aromatic tea varieties. Tea is a special natural product: its quality and value depend on the volatile essential oils that make up its bouquet. Poorly designed packaging lets these oils escape, allows oxygen to penetrate and turns a tea worth 30 EUR per 100 g into a flavourless powder within months.
Our block bottom bags for tea rely on high-barrier laminate films with an aluminum layer or an EVOH barrier layer. These keep the aroma in and oxygen out – the two most critical factors for tea freshness. The rectangular block form offers two additional advantages: a stable stance on the shelf with a classic, refined tea look and an ergonomic shape that is space-saving in the consumer's cupboard. Tea brands particularly appreciate the traditional appearance that a block bottom conveys compared with modern stand-up Doypacks.
Our range of block bags for tea covers fill volumes from 50 g (sample packs) to 500 g (catering and family packs). With or without a window (especially appealing for fruit tea blends with visually attractive petals), with or without a zip closure, with a matt or glossy surface. Food-grade compliance under EU 10/2011 is standard. For sustainable organic tea brands we offer mono-material variants and kraft paper block bags as a natural-looking alternative.

Your benefits with tea block bags from Elke Plastic
We have been importing premium packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For tea brands this means: aluminum laminate films with reliable aroma protection at terms normally reserved for international brands. At the same time we keep standard sizes in stock, so that even smaller tea producers and tea blending houses can start without large runs.
Our packaging specialists know the specific requirements of different tea varieties: green tea needs a high oxygen barrier, matcha extreme UV shielding, fruit tea benefits from a window, herbal tea wants volume for fluffy contents. We advise you on the right film and printing combination for your variety range – with the wealth of experience from thousands of tea projects.

Frequently asked questions about tea block bottom bags
Block bottom or stand-up base for tea?
A block bottom has a traditional, refined appearance and stands stably on the shelf. A stand-up base (Doypack) is more modern and more flexible in adapting the fill volume. Classic tea houses and premium brands often prefer the block bottom, while modern specialty tea brands tend towards the stand-up base. Both work excellently from a technical standpoint.
Which aroma barrier do I need?
For extremely aroma-sensitive varieties (matcha, Earl Grey, high-quality green teas): an aluminum laminate is essential. For standard black tea, herbal and fruit teas: an EVOH high barrier is often sufficient. For organic brands with recycling ambitions: mono-material variants as a compromise between barrier and sustainability.
Which sizes are common in the tea segment?
In consumer retail, 100 g and 250 g dominate. Premium ranges opt for 50–100 g to communicate the price-per-gram effect. Catering and café packs are typically 250–500 g. For gift sets, small multi-packs (4×50 g, 6×25 g) are popular.
With or without a window?
For fruit teas with colourful blossoms and dried fruits, a window is a strong selling point. For aroma-sensitive black and green teas, fully closed packaging is better thanks to UV protection. Matcha should always be packaged without a window.
How long does packaged tea keep?
With an aluminum laminate and a clean initial seal: 24–36 months. With an EVOH high barrier: 18–24 months. With kraft paper without a high barrier: 6–12 months. After opening, freshness diminishes considerably – a zip closure extends it noticeably.
Which film for sensitive varieties such as matcha?
Matcha is extremely sensitive to oxidation and light. An aluminum laminate without a window, printed in dark colours, with a zip closure. Ideally stored in a cold room after opening. For premium matcha we recommend special films with an additional UV protection layer.
Are the bags microwave-safe?
No. An aluminum laminate is not microwave-safe. As tea is not prepared in the microwave, however, this is not a relevant limitation.
Can the bags be disposed of in the recycling bin?
Classic aluminum laminate bags are only partly recyclable (residual waste). Mono-material variants without aluminum go in the recycling bin. Kraft paper bags with a thin PE inner layer go in the waste paper (with limitations).
Which mandatory information is required on tea packaging?
Under the Food Information Regulation: product name, ingredients list for blends, net fill quantity, best-before date, responsible operator, allergens. For organic tea, additionally the EU organic logo and the organic control body. For flavoured teas, a flavouring declaration.
Which printing suits tea brands?
Classic tea brands prefer a matt, high-gloss look with dark, refined tones. Specialty tea opts for minimalist designs with natural tones. Organic brands often work with a kraft-paper-imitating look. We advise on all printing methods and design directions.
Are smaller runs worthwhile for tea producers?
Yes. Stock items in standard sizes are available from stock. Custom printing becomes worthwhile from larger quantities. For small tea blending houses or seasonal editions we recommend standard stock with your own labels as a flexible interim solution.
