What are block bottom bags for spices?
Block bottom bags for spices are upright packaging bags with a rectangular block bottom and a multi-layer laminated film tailored specifically to the requirements of spice packaging. Spices are extremely aromatic natural products whose value comes from their volatile essential oils – and these very oils evaporate within days or weeks without an aroma barrier. A poorly designed pack destroys product quality, even when the raw spice was top-grade.
Our block bottom bags for spices rely on high-barrier films with an aluminum or EVOH layer. These reliably keep the volatile aroma components inside the bag while shielding out oxygen, moisture and UV light – the three arch-enemies of every spice. The block bottom shape ensures a secure stand on the shelf, presenting spice brands prominently while being space-saving in the consumer's home.
Our range of block bottom bags for spices covers typical fill sizes from 25 g (sample packs) to 500 g (catering packs). With or without a window, with or without a zip closure, in food-grade laminated film compliant with EU 10/2011. For sustainable spice brands we also offer mono-material variants with a slightly lower barrier effect but better recyclability – a compromise that is acceptable for many spices.

Your advantages with spice packaging from Elke Plastic
We have imported packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1976. For spice brands, material quality is decisive: an aluminum layer that is too thin lets aroma diffuse, while an unfavourable inner seal causes leaks. Our suppliers meet the strict requirements for consistent barrier values, so you can rely on constant aroma-protection quality.
Spice brands have particular requirements when it comes to packaging appearance: premium brands want a matt finish and single-colour designs, producer brands a tactile natural look, organic brands visible sustainability. Our packaging specialists advise you on the right film and printing choice for your brand positioning – and cover all variants with consistent food-grade compliance.
Shipping is from our German warehouse. Standard sizes are usually in stock; custom printing is scheduled individually within the delivery window. No minimum order value. All customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive volume pricing for larger runs. Free samples for aroma testing are a matter of course – so you can test packaging and contents in advance.
Frequently asked questions about spice block bottom bags
Why block bottom bags for spices and not stand-up pouches?
Both variants have their place. Block bottom bags stand better on the shelf and look classic and elegant thanks to their rectangular shape – many premium spice brands prefer them. Stand-up pouches are more flexible when adjusting the fill volume and convey a modern feel. For classic spices, block bottom is traditionally the first choice.
Which aroma barrier is the right one?
For extremely aroma-sensitive spices (freshly ground pepper, vanilla, saffron), an aluminum laminate is the strongest barrier. For robust spices (paprika, curry, dried herbs), a high-barrier EVOH is usually sufficient. Mono-material is the sustainable option with a slightly lower barrier – acceptable for less sensitive spices.
Which sizes are common in the spice segment?
In retail, 50–100 g dominate. Premium producers often opt for 25–50 g to highlight the price-per-gram effect. Catering packs are typically 250–500 g. For gift sets, small multi-packs are common.
With or without a window?
For colour-intense spice blends (BBQ rubs, curry, curry blends), a window is a clear selling point. For single-colour or premium spices, a matt full-surface design is often more elegant. UV-sensitive spices (vanilla, saffron) should be fully sealed.
With or without a zip closure?
A zip closure is almost standard in the spice segment – consumers want to open the pack repeatedly without decanting. For premium edition brands, however, classic sealing with a single opening is also valid – it conveys freshness and a higher consumption appeal.
Are the bags microwave- or oven-safe?
No. Laminated films containing aluminum are suitable for neither microwave nor oven. For oven applications (e.g. spice rubs for marinating meat in the pack), special sous-vide or high-temperature films are required.
How long do spices keep in the packaging?
With an aluminum laminate and a clean initial seal, a shelf life of typically 24–36 months. With EVOH or mono-material, 12–18 months. Once opened, freshness shortens to 3–6 months – a resealable zip closure extends this considerably.
Can I pack organic spices in mono-material?
Yes, mono-PE or mono-PP variants are available food-grade. The aroma barrier is lower than with an aluminum laminate, but sufficient for most organic spices in 50–150 g packs. For premium organic brands, mono-material is a strong sustainability signal.
What printing is possible?
Custom printing in gravure or digital printing. Mineral-oil-free and food-grade printing inks are standard. For a premium look we recommend matt high-gloss combinations; for organic brands, natural-coloured designs on a brown or beige background.
Which mandatory information must appear on spice packaging?
Under the LMIV: name, list of ingredients for blends, net quantity, best-before date, responsible operator, allergens. For organic spices, additionally the EU organic logo, the inspection body and the origin.
Are aluminum films recyclable?
Aluminum laminate films must be disposed of in residual waste – the multi-layer structure is difficult to separate in the recycling stream. For recyclability we recommend mono-material variants without an aluminum layer.
