What does "food-grade" mean for ziplock bags?
Food-grade means that the film is approved for direct contact with food. The legal basis for this in the EU is Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 on plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food. It specifies which substances may be used in plastics for food contact and which migration limits apply to different foods.
Food-grade ziplock bags are made from pure LDPE granulate that meets the strict requirements of EU 10/2011. They contain no plasticisers, no bisphenol-based additives and no inks classified as harmful in the inner layer. This makes them fully suitable for all foods – from dry (muesli, nuts) through moist (salad, meat) to fatty (cheese, sausage).
The following applications are typical: pre-portioning food in the professional kitchen, storing dried fruit or spices in the hobby kitchen, freezer portioning of meat and fish, packaging baked goods or pralines, and much more. On request we supply the declaration of conformity (Declaration of Compliance) for the documentation of your HACCP or supplier assessment.
What are food-grade ziplock bags suitable for?
- Hobby kitchen & meal prep: pre-portioned vegetables, salads, snack boxes, frozen meals
- Professional catering: mise en place, pre-portioned sauces, marinades, frozen fish fillets
- Food trade: pralines, pastries, dried fruit, spice portions
- Direct sales: farm shops for cheese, sausage, smoked fish, honeycombs
- Food truck & catering: prepared components, garnishes, sauce portions
- Food delivery: online delivery services with pre-portioned meals or recipe boxes
Which food-grade variant is the right one?
- Standard LDPE 50 microns: general food storage, fridge freshness, sandwiches
- 70 microns: freezer-suitable, robust storage of heavy foods
- 90–100 microns extra strong: premium storage, near-vacuum sealing
- With write-on panel: note the date, contents and quantities directly on the bag
- Small (80×120 mm): individual portions, snacks, herbs
- Medium (150×220 mm): family portions, bread storage, cheese leftovers
- Large (200×300 mm): salads, pre-portioned main meals, meat portions
- Declaration of conformity: on request for HACCP or QM documentation
Your advantages with food-grade ziplock bags from Elke Plastic
Since 1976 we have imported packaging bags directly from the manufacturer and know the legal requirements for food contact materials. For you this means: certified film quality with seamless documentation. On request we supply the declaration of conformity with migration data that you need for your HACCP file or your supplier assessment.
EU 10/2011 is complex – not every LDPE film is automatically approved for all food contact. For high-fat or solvent-containing foods, stricter migration limits sometimes apply. Our packaging specialists advise you on which variant is the right choice for your specific contents. For special requirements (e.g. for acidic foods with more than 4 hours of contact time) we refer you to the appropriate special film.
Dispatch is from our German warehouse. Stock items in standard sizes are available immediately; bulk orders are scheduled in advance. No minimum order value. Catering and food-trade customers receive tiered pricing and, in some cases, direct delivery within the region. Free samples for advance testing are a matter of course.
Frequently asked questions about food-grade ziplock bags
Are all ziplock bags automatically food-grade?
No. Food-grade status requires a specific choice of material and production-accompanying testing. Standard ziplock bags from the industrial sector may contain additives that rule out food contact. Always look for the explicit note "food-grade to EU 10/2011".
What is a declaration of conformity (DoC)?
The Declaration of Compliance is a document from the manufacturer confirming compliance with EU 10/2011. It lists the approved food categories, the migration tests and the contact conditions. For HACCP-certified businesses it is usually a mandatory document in the supplier assessment file.
Are the bags suitable for all foods?
LDPE bags with EU 10/2011 conformity are approved for most foods – dry goods, meat, vegetables, baked goods. For extremely fatty or alcohol-containing products (e.g. oils, spirits), migration limits may require a different film. We are happy to advise on special applications.
Can the bags be frozen?
Yes, LDPE is cold-resistant down to -40 °C – well below freezer temperature. For freezer applications we recommend 70 micron bags or thicker, as the film can otherwise become brittle at very low temperatures.
Are the bags microwave-safe?
Generally NOT recommended. LDPE melts at over approx. 105 °C, which is easily exceeded in the microwave. For microwave-safe food bags there are special PP bags – please ask us about special requirements.
How long does food keep in a ziplock bag?
In the fridge, typically 3–7 days for fresh produce; in the freezer, 3–12 months depending on the food. Shelf life depends above all on the contents – the packaging itself only affects the oxygen and moisture barrier. For maximum freshness we recommend removing the air before sealing.
Are films containing plasticisers unlawful?
Plasticisers may only be used in approved quantities and for certain foods. Pure LDPE films typically contain no plasticisers at all. For food contact, PVC films with high plasticiser contents are legally problematic.
Can I use the bags for sous-vide cooking?
No. Sous-vide requires special films with temperature resistance above 80 °C. Standard LDPE is not suitable for this. For sous-vide applications we recommend special PA/PE vacuum films.
Is printing with a food logo available?
Yes, we offer printing with food-grade inks. The EU food logo (glass and fork) may be used by all suppliers whose bags comply with EU 10/2011. Please ask us about custom printing.
What applies to direct sales to end customers?
For farm shops, direct sales and craft businesses the same regulations apply as for industrial packaging – only small-quantity producers may use certain simplifications. What matters is the EU 10/2011 conformity of the bags and the mandatory information (FIC) on the end product.
Are sustainable food bags available?
Yes, we have PCR-recycled and bio-PE variants in food-grade quality. For PCR recyclate, only food-grade approved material is permitted, which is tested more strictly than industrial recyclate. Bio-PE from sugar cane is chemically identical to conventional PE and fully food-grade.
