What are sustainable stand-up pouches?

Sustainable stand-up pouches – also called doypacks or stand-up pouches – are self-standing packaging bags made predominantly from recycled films (PCR-LDPE, GRS-certified) or from bio-based feedstocks such as bio-PE from Brazilian sugar cane, rather than from pure virgin material. When bio-PE is used, the plant captures CO2 from the atmosphere during its growth, so the finished film has a considerably better climate balance than conventional fossil polyethylene.

The classic stand-up pouch structure is retained: a foldable K-base ensures secure standing on the shelf, the side seams are sealed by heat-sealing and reliably protect the contents from oxygen, moisture and mechanical stress. Depending on the variant, mono-material structures are used that can remain in the recycling stream via the recycling bin, or PCR films that have already been recycled once and are returned to the cycle again after use.

Our sustainable stand-up pouches are suitable for food-grade applications, cosmetics, tea, powders, granulates and all products otherwise filled into doypacks. They can be printed with environmentally friendly inks and combined with a zip closure, window or aroma protection valve. This creates packaging solutions that unite brand storytelling, convenience for consumers and a clear sustainability promise – without compromising the protective function.

What are sustainable stand-up pouches suitable for?

  • Organic food & natural foods: coffee, tea, muesli, dried fruits and snacks in packaging that matches the organic claim
  • Natural cosmetics & drugstore: bath salts, powder masks and refillable care products with a refill promise
  • Food supplements: powders, granulates and capsules in mono-material or bio-PE doypacks
  • Pet food & treats: sustainable premium packaging for dogs, cats and small animals
  • Refill concepts: bulk refill packs for zero-waste-oriented brands
  • Gift & artisan products: small runs with high brand value and visibly sustainable packaging

Which sustainable stand-up pouches suit your application?

  • Material: PCR-LDPE (post-consumer recyclate, GRS-certified) for maximum circular impact, or bio-PE from sugar cane for a bio-based story
  • Size & fill volume: from the 100 ml sample pouch to the 5 kg bulk pack – standing stability must match the weight
  • Closure: resealable zip for refill concepts or simple sealing for single-use applications
  • Window: mono-material variant with a clear-view strip for visible product without composite aluminum
  • Printing: water-based or mineral-oil-free inks, FSC-certified card inserts optional
  • Certification: depending on the brand claim, check GRS, OK Compost, EU organic logo or EN 13432

Your advantages with sustainable stand-up pouches from Elke Plastic

Elke Plastic has been one of the largest importers of packaging bags in Germany since 1976. We bundle quantities directly at the manufacturer, check the material quality and so offer sustainable doypacks too at fair prices – without you having to take minimum quantities that only large corporations can manage. Our suppliers work with GRS, ISCC and OK Compost certificates, so you can properly document your sustainability claims in the specification.

Beyond the pure material advantage, you benefit from genuine advice: which variant actually recycles? Which closure stays tight when the PCR rate is at 80 %? Which printing system is compatible with mineral-oil-free inks? Over more than 40 years, our packaging specialists have supported thousands of projects and know the pitfalls between marketing claim and real machine compatibility on your filling line.

All sustainable stand-up pouches are shipped from our German warehouse – with short distances and low-CO2 logistics. We supply private customers as well as industrial fillers, offer free samples for advance testing and support individual printing with graduated prices for larger runs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Sustainable Stand-Up Pouches

What makes a stand-up pouch truly sustainable?

A doypack only becomes genuinely sustainable through verifiable criteria: a high PCR content (post-consumer recyclate) with a GRS certificate, a mono-material structure for full recyclability, or bio-based feedstocks such as bio-PE from sugar cane with ISCC Plus proof. Marketing terms like "green" or "eco" without a certificate are not enough – always ask for the material data sheets.

How do sustainable and recyclable stand-up pouches differ?

Recyclable stand-up pouches are designed so they can return to the materials cycle after use (usually a mono-PE structure). Sustainable stand-up pouches have a broader focus: they may contain recycled films, be bio-based or combine both. Ideally, a variant is both recycled and recyclable.

Can I use sustainable doypacks for food?

Yes, provided the respective variant comes with a food-grade certificate in accordance with EU 10/2011. Bio-PE from sugar cane is molecularly identical to conventional PE and fully food-grade. With PCR films it depends on the recycling process – we only supply food-grade certified qualities for food contact.

What does GRS certification mean?

GRS stands for Global Recycled Standard – an internationally recognised certificate that verifies the recycled content of a film seamlessly from the collection point to the end product. Anyone using GRS material can demonstrably communicate what share of recycled material their packaging contains.

What is bio-PE and is it compostable?

Bio-PE is made from sugar-cane ethanol and is chemically identical to conventional polyethylene. It is NOT compostable, but it is advantageous in terms of CO2 balance, as the plant growth captures CO2. It is recyclable like normal PE via the recycling stream.

How can sustainable stand-up pouches be printed?

We offer printing with water-based or mineral-oil-free inks. This keeps recyclability intact and lets your packaging visibly communicate the sustainability promise. On request with FSC logo, GRS note or individual brand design.

Are smaller quantities possible for start-ups?

Yes. Since we keep stock items in standard sizes, even small brands can test sustainable doypacks without a large print run. Individual printing pays off from larger quantities – graduated prices on request.

What closure options are there?

Sustainable stand-up pouches are available with or without a zip closure, optionally with an aroma protection valve for coffee or with a window in a mono-material variant. Resealable variants support refill and reusable concepts.

What about industrial compostability?

For compostable doypacks (EN 13432 / OK Compost) we offer special PLA composite films. These are separate from the classic PE-based sustainability variants – contact us for a suitable quote.

How sustainable is shipping?

Our shipping is from our German warehouse – short distances, no overseas direct deliveries to consumers. Parcels are packed in recycled shipping boxes, and the fill material consists of paper or recycled padding. This keeps the CO2 footprint low during shipping too.

Can I request samples in advance?

Yes, free samples are a matter of course. Order via our sample form or contact our team directly – this lets you check the material look, standing stability and printability before you place the final order.
