What are block bottom bags for food?
Block bottom bags for food are upright packaging bags with a rectangular block bottom, whose film and inner layer are specially approved for direct contact with food. The legal basis for this is Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011, which governs which plastic materials and which additives may be used in food packaging – and which migration limits apply.
In the food segment, the upright block bottom has a clear advantage over flat or pillow bags: the packaging stands upright on the shelf, makes the product visible and conveys a premium impression. For muesli, dried fruit, nuts, confectionery and upright food packaging, the block bottom is the usual standard. In the end customer's home it also scores through space-saving storage in the pantry.
Our block bottom bags for food range includes both laminate film variants (PET/aluminum/PE) for maximum aroma and moisture protection and kraft paper variants for sustainable organic brands. Fill volumes range from 50 g (sampler) up to 1 kg (family pack). With or without a window, with or without a zip closure. We supply declarations of compliance with migration data on request – important for HACCP-certified operations and supplier assessments.

- Muesli & cereals: standard packaging for retail and artisan producers
- Dried fruit & nuts: upright packaging with a strong brand presence
- Confectionery: sweets, chocolate buttons, dried berries in handy packs
- Baking ingredients: almonds, poppy seeds, sesame, baking flavourings, dried yeast
- Pet food (premium): high-quality dog and cat food in end-customer convenience formats
- Snacks & trail mix: outdoor snacks, sports bar mixes, dried fruit mixes

Your advantages with food block bottom bags from Elke Plastic
Since 1976 we have imported packaging bags directly from the manufacturer and know the legal requirements for food contact materials from thousands of food projects. For you this means: certified film quality with seamless documentation. On request we supply declarations of compliance with migration data for your HACCP file and supplier assessment.
Our packaging specialists advise on every aspect: which laminate film suits your contents? Are standard films enough, or do you need an aluminum aroma barrier? Is kraft paper with a PE inner layer the right choice for your sustainable brand story? We help you find the right variant from the outset, rather than reworking it after several production runs.
Shipping is from our German warehouse. Standard sizes are generally in stock; custom printing is scheduled individually within the delivery window. No minimum order value. Food producers and catering customers receive volume pricing. Free samples for material and aroma testing are a matter of course.
Frequently asked questions about food block bottom bags
Are all block bottom bags automatically food-grade?
No. Food-grade compliance requires a specific choice of material and inner coating as well as testing to EU 10/2011. Standard industrial bags are not automatically approved for food contact. Look for the explicit “food-grade” note or the declaration of compliance.
What is a declaration of compliance (DoC)?
The declaration of compliance is a manufacturer document confirming conformity with EU 10/2011. It lists the approved food categories, migration tests and contact conditions. For HACCP-certified operations it is usually a mandatory document in the supplier assessment file.
Which structure suits which food?
For dry goods (muesli, nuts): a standard PET/PE laminate is sufficient. For aroma-sensitive products (coffee, tea, vanilla): an aluminum laminate. For moist or greasy contents: PA/PE with a high barrier. For organic brands: kraft paper with a PE inner layer.
With or without a window?
For colour-intensive or visually appealing products (dried fruit, berries, confectionery), a window makes a clear selling point. For light-sensitive products (vitamins, some food colours) or with full brand printing, no window.
Which size is standard?
In retail to end customers, 250 g and 500 g dominate. Premium brands opt for 100–250 g for a premium impression. Catering packs are typically 500 g–1 kg. For samplers and tasting sets, 25–50 g is common.
How long does packaged food keep?
With an aluminum laminate: 18–36 months depending on the contents. With PET/PE: 6–18 months. With kraft paper without a PE inner layer: 3–6 months (breathable, hence a shorter shelf life). After opening, freshness diminishes considerably – a zip closure extends it significantly.
What is mandatory on food packaging?
Under the FIC Regulation: name, list of ingredients, net quantity, best-before date, responsible business, allergens. For organic products, additionally the EU organic logo and the organic control body.
Are the bags microwave-safe?
Generally NOT. Standard LDPE and aluminum laminate are not microwave-safe. For microwave-safe food bags there are special PP films – talk to us for special requirements.
Can the bags be frozen?
Yes, provided the film is suitable for low temperatures. Standard laminate films are unproblematic down to -20 °C. For frozen applications we recommend reinforced film thicknesses – thin films can become brittle in extreme cold.
Which printing is food-grade?
Our food-grade printing inks are mineral-oil-free and approved to EU 10/2011. Ideally the printing inks do not come into direct contact with the food – the inner side stays unprinted, while the outer side can be printed as desired.
Are sustainable food bags available?
Yes, we carry PCR-recycled laminate films (food-grade), bio-PE and mono-material variants in our range. For PCR, food-grade material must be used, which is tested more strictly than industrial recyclate.
