What are food-grade flat bags?

Food-grade flat bags are the simple, cost-effective option for food packaging without resealability. They are made from pure LDPE granulate that meets the strict requirements of Regulation (EU) No 10/2011: no plasticisers, no questionable additives, no migration into the packaged food. Unlike ziplock bags, flat bags have no integrated zip closure – after filling they are sealed with adhesive tape, a heat sealer or clip band.

The range of applications is enormous: pre-portioning in professional kitchens, freezer storage in private households, direct marketing in farm shops or for artisan baked goods, accompanying bags for catering or online food shipping – wherever packaging only needs to be opened once and cost matters, flat bags are the standard. They are available in all common standard formats and film thicknesses (50, 70, 90 microns).

Our range of food-grade flat bags covers sizes from 100×150 mm (single portion) to 400×600 mm (family portion). Food-grade status to EU 10/2011 is standard, with or without a Euro hole, in transparent LDPE film. For professional kitchens with HACCP compliance we supply declarations of compliance and migration data on request for your quality-management file. For direct marketing in farm shops or artisan sales we recommend combining them with individual printing or self-adhesive mandatory-information labels.

What are food-grade flat bags suitable for?

  • Frozen portions: vegetables, meat, dried fruit in family portions
  • Farm shops & direct marketing: cheese, sausage, honey in end-customer packs
  • Professional kitchens: mise en place, pre-portioned salads, prepared components

  • Catering & food trucks: prepared sauces, garnishes, snacks
  • Online food shipping: accompanying bags for delivery-service customers

Which food-grade variant is the right one?

  • Standard LDPE 50 microns: general food storage, fridge, salads
  • 70 microns: freezer-suitable, more robust storage
  • 90 microns: premium storage of heavy foods, vacuum-like applications
  • Small (100×150 to 150×220 mm): single portions, snacks
  • Medium (200×300 mm): family portions, bread storage
  • Large (300×400 to 400×600 mm): salads, large meat portions, family freezer portions
  • With Euro hole: hanging presentation in direct sales
  • Declaration of compliance: on request for HACCP/QM files

Your advantages with food-grade flat bags from Elke Plastic

We have imported packaging bags directly from the manufacturer since 1976 and know the legal requirements for food contact materials. For you, that means certified LDPE film quality with complete documentation. On request we supply declarations of compliance with migration data for your HACCP or quality-management file.

Our packaging specialists advise on film choice and film thickness depending on the food requirement: for dry snacks 50 microns is sufficient, for frozen meat we recommend 70 microns, and for sharp-edged baked goods or salad components 90 microns. For special requirements (fatty foods with hours of contact time, alcohol-containing contents) we refer you to the appropriate specialty film.

Shipping is from our German warehouse. Standard food sizes are available immediately; bulk packs are scheduled accordingly. No minimum order value. Hospitality and all customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive tiered pricing. Declarations of compliance and free samples are of course available on request.

Frequently asked questions about food-grade flat bags

Are all flat bags automatically food-grade?

No. Food-grade status requires specific material selection and in-process testing. Standard industrial flat bags may contain additives that rule out food contact. Look for the explicit note “food-grade to EU 10/2011”.

How are flat bags sealed?

Flat bags have no integrated closure. They are sealed with adhesive tape, a heat sealer, clip band or a cable tie. For packaging that needs to be reopened frequently we recommend ziplock bags.

What is a declaration of compliance (DoC)?

The declaration of compliance is a manufacturer document confirming conformity with EU 10/2011. It lists the approved food categories, migration tests and contact conditions. For HACCP-certified businesses it is usually a mandatory document.

Are the bags suitable for all foods?

Almost all. For extremely fatty or alcohol-containing products, migration limits may require a different film. We are happy to advise on special applications – for example oily foods with prolonged contact times.

Can the bags be frozen?

Yes, LDPE is cold-resistant down to -40 °C. For frequent freezer use we recommend 70 microns or thicker, as thin film can become brittle at very low temperatures.

Are the bags microwave-safe?

NO. Standard LDPE melts above 100 °C. For microwave-safe food bags there are special PP films – contact us for special requirements.

Can the bags be used for sous-vide?

NO. Sous-vide requires special films with temperature resistance above 80 °C. Standard LDPE is not suitable for this – we have special PA/PE vacuum films for sous-vide applications.

Are sustainable food-grade flat bags available?

Yes, we have PCR-recycled and bio-PE variants in food-grade quality. PCR must hold food-grade approval, which is tested more strictly than industrial recyclate. Bio-PE is fully food-grade.

Which size is standard in direct sales?

For farm shops, 200×300 mm (cheese, sausage portions), 300×400 mm (bread portions), 150×220 mm (praline sets). For catering, often 250×350 mm for salad portions. For frozen family packs, 300×400 mm to 400×600 mm.

Which printing suits direct marketers?

Mineral-oil-free, food-grade printing inks are standard. A logo plus mandatory information can be printed on – for farm shops with a changing range, often combined with self-adhesive labels.

What must appear on the packaging under food information rules?

Product name, list of ingredients, net quantity, best-before date, responsible party, allergens. For organic products, additionally the EU organic logo and the inspection body. For direct sales to end customers in farm shops there is simplified labelling.
