What are stand-up pouches?

Stand-up pouches – also known as doypacks – are flexible packaging bags with a specially shaped base that allows them to stand upright. This property makes them ideal for shelf presentation in supermarkets, boutiques, bakeries or online shops.

Compared to classic flat bags, stand-up pouches offer more volume, better visibility and a more professional appearance. Depending on the version, they have a window (to show the product), a resealable zip (for repeated removal), an aroma protection valve (for freshly roasted coffee) or an aluminum inner layer (for maximum protection against light and aroma loss).

Made from PE, PP, PET, recyclable LDPE, aluminum laminate or kraft paper – matched to your product and your sustainability goals.

Material properties of stand-up pouches in detail

Choosing the right material laminate determines the aroma protection, shelf life, brand perception and recyclability of a stand-up pouch. Below is a technical overview of the film laminates processed at Elke Plastic, with their barrier properties and typical applications.

PET12 / AL7 / LDPE110 — aluminum high barrier

Three-layer laminate of 12 microns polyethylene terephthalate (print side), 7 microns pure aluminum as a barrier layer and 110 microns low-density polyethylene (seal side). Oxygen transmission rate (OTR) < 0.1 cm³/m²·24h, water vapour transmission rate (WVTR) < 0.1 g/m²·24h. Aroma and light barrier close to 100%. Use: coffee, tea, pet food, pharmaceutical products, oxidation-sensitive foods.

Kraft paper 50g / AL7 / CPP60 — paper-aluminum hybrid

Outer side of 50 g/m² natural or coloured kraft paper, behind it a 7 microns aluminum lamination as a barrier layer, inside 60 microns cast polypropylene for the seal seam. Visually crafted and natural, technically almost identical barrier values to the pure PET/AL/LDPE laminate. Popular for premium coffee, tea, artisan products and sustainability-oriented brand positioning.

PET12 / LDPE110 — transparent standard

Two-layer laminate without aluminum. OTR approx. 50–80 cm³/m²·24h, WVTR approx. 2–4 g/m²·24h. Reduced barrier, but full product visibility. Suitable for confectionery, nuts, dry products with a short best-before date or fresh products with a high turnover rate.

Mono-PE (LDPE / EVOH / LDPE) — recyclable

Monomaterial laminate on a polyethylene basis with a thin EVOH barrier layer (< 5% share). Recyclable in the yellow bag as mono-PE, correctly classifiable in sorting plants by near-infrared detection (NIR). OTR is 1–3 cm³/m²·24h and thus significantly better than pure PE films. Meets the requirements of the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) from 2030.

Mono-PP — high-temperature version

Pure polypropylene film, microwave-suitable up to 100 °C. Sterilisable and suitable for hot-fill products. The recycling stream for PP packaging is well established in Germany. Typical applications: convenience food, sauces, microwave-ready meals.

Kraft paper / PLA laminate — biodegradable

Compostable laminate of a kraft paper outer side and a PLA inner film (polylactic acid from corn starch). Certified to EN 13432 for industrial composting. Suitable only for dry foods (tea, coffee, muesli, snacks) — not for fatty or moisture-containing products due to the reduced barrier.

All materials are certified to EU Regulation 10/2011 for food contact. We supply the corresponding declaration of conformity (PIM) with every order on request. For material selection the rule is: the higher the barrier, the longer the shelf life — the more recyclability, the more important a realistic logistics and best-before plan.

Individual customisation — printing, special sizes and advice

Beyond the in-stock range, we manufacture stand-up pouches in individual special sizes and with your brand printing. The following options are available for large runs.

Printing processes and colour range

Printing in the flexographic or gravure process with up to 10 colours, including Pantone spot colours, metallic effects and spot varnish. Full-surface printing across the entire outer side including the side gussets is possible. On request we supply digital proofs for approval before production.

Special sizes and special shapes

Format adjustments are freely selectable in width (60–400 mm), height (90–500 mm) and bottom gusset depth (30–120 mm). Additional features such as an aroma protection valve, zipper resealing, Euro hole, tear notch or special bottom configurations are integrated to specification.

We arrange the minimum order quantity and delivery time individually after your enquiry. For brand design, structural advice and material recommendations, our technical sales team is available directly. Contact us for a specific quote.

Sustainability and the EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR)

The EU Packaging Regulation (PPWR) fundamentally changes the requirements for plastic packaging from 2030: all packaging must be either recyclable or compostable, and multi-layer laminates with aluminum fall out of material recycling. Our range is prepared for these requirements.

Monomaterial for single-variety recycling

Our mono-PE doypacks (LDPE/EVOH/LDPE) are identifiable as polyethylene in sorting plants via near-infrared detection (NIR) and are fed into the PE recycling stream. The thin EVOH barrier layer (< 5% share) is uncritical in the recycling process and complies with the current RecyClass design guidelines. Mono-PP versions are also available and established in the German PP stream.

Compostable alternatives

For organic brands and circular-economy concepts we offer industrially compostable doypacks made from kraft paper and PLA, certified to EN 13432. These decompose without residue within 12 weeks under industrial composting conditions (58 °C, controlled humidity). Important: in home composting the decomposition rate is significantly slower — disposal belongs in the organic waste bin, not in your own compost.

PPWR conformity and migration path

Aluminum high-barrier laminates (PET/AL/LDPE) remain without an equivalent substitute for aroma-sensitive products, but from 2030 can only be used within the scope of technical exceptions. We advise on the gradual switch to mono-material solutions — typically with a hybrid range that continues to supply premium varieties in a high barrier and mass-market in mono-PE.
