What are seed and garden packaging?

Seed packaging are specialised small bags for seed distribution and garden assortments: tomato seeds, herb seeds, organic seed, old cultivated varieties, wildflower mixes, vegetable seed. Garden accessories (powdered fertilisers, root concentrates, rooting aids) are also packed in these bags.

The main requirements are moisture protection (seed must not germinate before sowing), writability (variety name, best-before date, sowing instructions, harvest date), Euro hole punching (for garden centre presentation on pegboards) and breathability for moist seed (e.g. pre-germinated varieties).

Typical materials: LDPE 70–90 microns with a ziplock for standard seed, OPP with window for visually attractive seed mixes (flower seed), kraft paper bags for organic and wildflower seed, small stand-up pouches for fertiliser and garden powder products.

All materials are certified in accordance with EU 10/2011 and FIC – important for edible seed (herbs, sprouts, microgreens seed).

What are seed and garden packaging suitable for?

  • Vegetable and herb seed: small ziplock bags with Euro hole punching for garden centre presentation on pegboards.
  • Flower seed mixes: OPP bags with window for visual presentation of the colourful seed mix.
  • Organic seed and old cultivated varieties: kraft paper bags with an organic look and FSC certification for sustainable seed initiatives.
  • Wildflower and bee-pasture seed: small printed bags with sowing instructions and care notes.
  • Microgreens and sprout seed: food-grade ziplock bags for edible seed with FIC compliance.
  • Plant fertiliser and garden powders: small stand-up pouches for root activators, rooting powder, mineral fertiliser.
  • Seed-swap initiatives and community-supported agriculture: compostable kraft paper bags with organic printing inks.

Which seed packaging variants are there?

The choice of seed packaging depends on the seed type, sales channel and brand positioning:

Advantages of seed and garden packaging

  • Ziplock with a double lip: secure against unintended opening, reusable multiple times for multi-year sowing of the same seed.
  • Reinforced Euro hole punching: for hanging presentation on pegboards in garden centres.
  • Integrated write-on panel: variety name, sowing date, best-before date directly on the front of the bag.
  • Certified food-grade in accordance with EU 10/2011 and FIC for microgreens, sprout and edible seed.
  • Moisture protection: prevents premature germination during storage and distribution.
  • FSC-certified kraft paper on request for organic seed brands.
  • For private & trade: all customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive transparent graduated prices directly in the order table, no minimum order value.
  • Fast shipping from our German warehouse.

Material properties of seed packaging in detail

Seed packaging requires moisture protection, writability and retail appeal. The material choice depends on seed sensitivity and the distribution channel.

LDPE 70–90 microns — ziplock standard

Polyethylene with a double-lip ziplock. Standard for vegetable and herb seed. Moisture-tight, reclosable multiple times for multi-year sowing. With reinforced Euro hole punching for garden centre presentation.

LDPE with write-on panel

Variant with a matt strip at the top right, writable with a marker, ballpoint pen or pencil. Practical for seed brands with frequent variety changes and for self-packed organic seed.

OPP 30 microns with window

Crystal-clear polypropylene film with a transparent front. Popular for flower seed mixes with a visually attractive assortment look (e.g. wildflower mix with various coloured seeds).

Kraft paper 50–70 g/m² — organic look

Natural paper in a handcrafted look, with or without a thin PE inner side (with a PE content below 5% it remains recyclable in the paper recycling stream). Popular for organic seed, community-supported agriculture and farm shop direct marketing.

Food-grade variant

LDPE bags in accordance with EU 10/2011 for direct food contact — important for edible seed such as microgreens, sprouts and edible wild herbs. Declaration of conformity (PIM) on request.

Ziplock mechanism

Double-lip ziplock made of PE for repeated sowing from the same bag. Service life of 30–50 opening/closing cycles without loss of function — important for multi-year seed storage.

Moisture protection

With the ziplock fully closed, LDPE bags are moisture-tight. The water content in the bag remains below 5% even after several months of storage — decisive for seed germination capacity at future sowing.

Customisation – variety name, sowing instructions and Euro hole

Seed packaging is in many cases produced with custom printing — the variety name on the bag is a sales argument on the garden centre shelf.

Printing processes

Printing in flexographic printing with up to 4 colours on film seed bags, offset printing on kraft paper bags with high-resolution variety photo display. Pantone special colours for the brand colour code.

Special sizes and Euro hole punching

Format adjustments freely selectable from 40×60 mm mini seed bags to 120×180 mm seed large portions. Reinforced Euro hole punching for pegboard presentation, position top centre.

FIC and sowing layout

For edible seed, FIC-compliant printing with allergen notes. Standard sowing layout: variety name, best-before date field, sowing period, planting depth, planting spacing, care notes.

Minimum run and delivery time

We clarify the minimum quantity for custom productions individually following your enquiry, up to 10,000 units (kraft paper). Delivery time on request. Submit an enquiry.

Sustainability – seed packaging and organic brands

Seed brands often have a strong sustainability requirement — organic seed, old cultivated varieties and wildflower initiatives fit perfectly with a green brand positioning using sustainable packaging.

Kraft paper and paper recycling

Kraft paper seed bags are fully recyclable in the paper recycling stream. With a thin PE inner side (below 5% content) they remain paper-recyclable. FSC certification on request for organic seed brands.

Compostable PLA composites

On request, kraft paper with a PLA coating industrially compostable in accordance with EN 13432. Suitable for organic seed initiatives with a circularity-minded brand promise and for community-supported agriculture with direct marketing.

Mono-PE and PPWR compliance

LDPE ziplock seed bags are mono-material recyclable in the PE stream. NIR-detectable in German sorting plants, compliant with the RecyClass design guideline. They meet the EU Packaging Regulation from 2030.

Multi-year reuse

Ziplock seed bags are used over several years — seed collectors refill the bags every year with their own harvest. Service life of 5–10 years, significantly more sustainable than single-use seed packets made of kraft paper.

Organic printing inks

On request, organic printing inks in accordance with the RecyClass design guideline for seed brands with a consistent sustainability strategy. Important for organic seed initiatives with a compostable end-packaging concept.
