What is bakery packaging?
Bakery packaging means specialised packaging solutions for bread, rolls, croissants, Danish pastries and bakery assortments. It has to meet three requirements at once: breathable (so baked goods don't "sweat"), grease-proof (for croissants, doughnuts and Danish pastries) and certified food-grade to EU 10/2011.
In bakery retail they are also a direct advertising medium at the point of sale: printed bags and carrier bags reach thousands of customers a day and strengthen the bakery brand well beyond the point of sale.
Typical materials: kraft paper 35–60 g/m² for dry baked goods, kraft paper with a thin PE inner layer for greasy Danish pastries, and wet-strength greaseproof substitute for filled rolls.
What is bakery packaging suitable for?
- Bread and bread roll sales: cross bottom bags and gusseted bags made of breathable kraft paper for standard bakery assortments.
- Croissants and Danish pastries: kraft paper with a PE inner layer — protects against grease bleed-through while staying paper-recyclable.
- Confectionery and sweet snacks: cone bags made of kraft paper for classic counter service.
- Filled rolls and snacks: wet-strength bags or wrapping paper for catering and to-go sales.
- Take-away assortments: paper carrier bags with logo printing for premium bakeries.
- Organic bakeries and farm shops: FSC-certified kraft paper with an unprinted natural look.
Which bakery packaging versions are there?
Bakery packaging comprises several bag shapes, which in practice are combined according to the baked good:
- Cross bottom bags: a square standing base, classic for bread, rolls and croissants.
- Block bottom bags: a stable base shape for reusable bread packaging.
- Cone bags: a classic for confectionery, biscuits and roasted almonds in counter sales.
- Side gusset bags: for long-shaped bread, baguettes and bulky baked goods.
- Gusseted bags and carrier bags made of kraft paper: for take-away sales and assortment packaging.
- Wet-strength greaseproof substitute: for filled rolls, salads and wraps with a high moisture content.
Advantages of bakery packaging
- Breathable: kraft paper lets residual moisture escape — baked goods stay crisp.
- Grease-proof when needed: with a thin PE inner layer for croissants and Danish pastries.
- Certified food-grade to EU 10/2011 with a declaration of conformity.
- Recoverable in the paper recycling stream — fully PPWR-compliant.
- Printable as an advertising medium with your bakery logo, brand slogan and assortment information.
- FSC certification on request for sustainability-minded organic bakeries.
- For private & trade: all customers – B2B and B2C alike – receive transparent tiered prices directly in the order table, with no minimum order value.
- Fast delivery from our German warehouse.
Material properties of bakery packaging in detail
Bakery packaging has to be breathable, grease-proof and food-grade — baked goods keep breathing after baking, but need protection from grease bleed-through and drying out.
Kraft paper 35–60 g/m² — standard version
Natural paper in brown or white, breathable. Suitable for bread rolls, croissants and bread. Not grease-proof — combine with a PE inner layer for oily baked goods. Standard cross bottom and bottom bags for bakery sales.
Kraft paper with PE inner layer — grease-proof
Kraft paper on the outside, with a 15–25 microns LDPE coating inside. Protects against grease bleed-through with croissants, Danish pastries, doughnuts and chips. Food-grade to EU 10/2011 and recoverable in the paper recycling stream.
Greaseproof substitute, wet-strength
Speciality paper with wet strength for moist baked goods: filled rolls, salads, wraps and fresh baked goods with a high moisture content.
Cone bags and carrier bags
Classic bakery packaging formats made of kraft paper: cone bags for confectionery and sweet snacks, paper carrier bags for take-away assortments.
Cross bottom bags — the bakery standard
A square base shape for stable presentation: bread sales at the bakery counter, patisserie assortments and organic baked goods with a farm shop character.
Food-grade and food information (FIC)
All materials are certified to EU 10/2011 and the food information regulation (FIC). Declaration of conformity (PIM) on request. Migration test reports are available for sensitive bakery products.
Customisation — bakery branding and special sizes
Bakery packaging is a direct advertising medium at the point of sale — printed bags and carrier bags reach thousands of customers a day.
Printing methods
Printing using flexographic printing with up to 4 colours on kraft paper. Premium patisserie assortments in gravure printing with up to 8 colours. Logo, bakery name and brand slogan on the front.
Bag shapes and sizes
We produce cross bottom, block bottom, cone bag and carrier bag versions for all bakery assortments. Standard sizes for bread, rolls, croissants and confectionery, or customisation to your needs.
Windows and hanging features
On request with a transparent window on the front of the bag — important for patisserie confectionery assortments and premium bread sales.
We will agree the minimum quantity and delivery time individually following your enquiry, from print approval onwards. Make an enquiry.
Sustainability — bakery packaging in paper recycling
Paper bakery packaging is ecologically advantageous — most materials are recoverable in the paper recycling stream and are a central building block of sustainable bakery strategies.
Paper recycling
Pure kraft paper bags are recycled via the paper collection system (blue bin). PE-coated versions with a PE content below 5% remain recoverable in the paper stream.
FSC-certified paper
On request, we supply bakery packaging made from FSC-certified paper — important for sustainability-minded bakeries, organic bakers and farm shop concepts.
Compostable versions
Pure paper packaging without a PE coating can be disposed of in the organic bin, provided it is not heavily soiled. For defined composting, a kraft paper/PLA composite to EN 13432 is available on request.
PPWR compliance
Paper bakery packaging already meets the EU Packaging Regulation today. Material efficiency through the optimal choice of grammage is the most important lever — 35 g/m² instead of 60 g/m² saves a considerable amount of material.
Frequently asked questions about bakery packaging
Which packaging is the classic choice for bread rolls?
For over-the-counter bread roll orders, cone bags made of kraft paper are the absolute classic. More practical for taking away are paper carrier bags or food-grade paper carrier bags. For greasy rolls (börek, pizza rolls), choose a food-grade, grease-proof option.
Which packaging for bread?
For whole loaves, transparent cross bottom bags (which stand up thanks to the cross bottom) are ideal, or for presentation natron kraft block bottom bags with a window. For shipping sliced bread, use food-grade flat bags.
Are bakery packaging products food-grade?
Yes – all packaging labelled “food-grade” complies with EU 10/2011. We send the declaration of conformity on request. Important for greasy baked goods: check explicitly for grease resistance.
Which packaging for greasy baked goods?
For greasy baked goods such as croissants, börek or pizza rolls, be sure to choose a food-grade option with a grease barrier. Standard kraft paper soaks up grease. Recommendation: food-grade paper carrier bags with an inner coating.
Can I have bakery packaging printed?
Yes – with your bakery logo, slogan, address and mandatory food information (FIC) details. Printing methods: flexographic printing (standard colours), gravure printing (premium), screen printing (small quantities). → request a custom production.
Which cone bag size for bread rolls?
For 2–3 rolls, a medium cone bag (approx. 175×280 mm) is sufficient. For a family order (5–10 rolls), larger formats (240×330 mm). Detailed sizes are in the cone bags overview.
How do I close bakery packaging?
Cone bags: fold over or use a twist closure. Carrier bags: tie the handles together. Cross bottom bags: twist the top or use a bag clip. For longer storage, heat-sealable sealed edge bags are the better choice.
Which packaging for sweet pastries?
For sweet pastries, Danish pastries and biscuits, natron kraft block bottom bags with a window are ideal, or for shipping food-grade flat bags. For high-quality presentation, see patisserie packaging.
Is the packaging sustainable?
Kraft paper and natron kraft paper are bio-based (a renewable raw material) and fully recyclable in the paper waste stream. For film bags, there are versions made from 100% recycled LDPE (GRS-certified) → sustainable packaging.
Can I order here as a hobby baker too?
Yes, we'd be delighted. We also supply standard quantities to private customers – ideal for wedding catering, Christmas baking gifts, farm shop weekend sales or a market stall. No minimum order in the standard range.
Which packaging for cake portions?
For single portions (muffins, cupcake shipping), small-format transparent flat bags or stand-up pouches with a window are ideal. For premium cupcakes, a patisserie box is the better choice.
Is there bakery packaging with a window?
Yes – block bottom bags with a window combine the premium look of kraft paper with the sales advantage of showing the contents. Ideal for Danish pastries, bread roll assortments and muesli mixes.
Which print finish is worthwhile for a bakery?
Worthwhile options are: logo + address on paper carrier bags (advertising around town), mandatory food information (FIC) details on packaging for pre-packed bread, and decorative seasonal designs (Christmas, Easter). Printing pays off from larger print runs.
How long do packaged baked goods stay fresh?
It depends on the packaging and the baked goods. Breathable paper bags keep baked goods crisp (4–12 h). Airtight film extends shelf life but softens the crust. Heat-sealable sealed edge bags are best for longer storage (1–2 weeks).
