What is coffee packaging?
Coffee packaging consists of specially designed bags for roasted coffee – both whole beans and ground. The special feature: freshly roasted coffee releases CO₂ after roasting, which must escape from the packaging without oxygen getting in (which would ruin the flavour).
That is what the aroma protection valve is for – a small one-way valve in the bag that lets CO₂ escape but no oxygen back in. This extends the freshness of your coffee by weeks.
In addition, aluminum inner layers or laminate materials protect against light, moisture and foreign aromas. For sustainable options, kraft paper with a food-grade inner coating is used.

Material Properties of Coffee Packaging in Detail
Coffee packaging covers all bag formats for roasted coffee, ground coffee and specialty products. The choice of material depends on aroma sensitivity, shelf-life requirements and brand positioning.
Stand-up pouches and block bottom bags
Classic coffee packaging formats with a stable base construction for shelf presentation. Laminate options: PET/AL/LDPE for an aluminum high barrier, kraft paper/AL/LDPE for an artisan look, mono-PE for PPWR compliance.
Side gusset bags
Square base shape with a tin-tie closure at the top. The classic specialty coffee packaging in the premium segment. Identical material options to stand-up pouches.
Flat bags with an aroma valve
The simplest coffee packaging format — flat-sealed, with an integrated aroma valve. Suitable for 100 g / 250 g sampler sizes, sampler sets and shipping packaging.
Aroma protection valve — technical function
Coffee beans release CO₂ and aromatic compounds after roasting. The aroma valve lets CO₂ escape while at the same time blocking the ingress of oxygen. Without a valve, coffee would have to degas for 14 days before it could be packed airtight.
Material recommendation by coffee type
Premium specialty coffee: PET/AL/LDPE or kraft paper/AL/LDPE for maximum barrier and brand look. Standard filter coffee: mono-PE for a PPWR-compliant solution. Direct marketers / short shelf life: kraft paper/PLA compostable.
All materials are certified for food contact to EU 10/2011.
Customisation – Brand Look and Special Features
Coffee packaging is the identity carrier of a coffee brand — printing and finishing are the most important marketing decisions.
Printing processes
Printing in gravure with up to 10 colours, including Pantone spot colours, metallic effects and partial high-gloss or soft-touch varnish. High-resolution photos of plantations, beans, roaster portraits.
Additional features
On request we integrate an aroma valve, window, zipper, tin-tie closure, base flap or tear notch. The aroma valve position and brand layout are checked in advance in a design preview.
We clarify the minimum order quantity and delivery time individually following your enquiry, from print approval. Our technical sales team is available for brand conception and material recommendations. Submit an enquiry.
Sustainability – Coffee Packaging on the PPWR Migration Path
The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) hits the coffee industry particularly hard, since aluminum high-barrier laminates are technically central to premium coffee. We guide roasteries and brands through the migration path.
Mono-PE as the standard solution
For coffee with a shelf life of up to 6–8 months, the mono-PE Doypack is the future-proof solution. NIR-detectable in the PE recycling stream, RecyClass-certified. Already in use by several large chain roasters.
Hybrid range strategy
For aroma-sensitive specialty coffee, aluminum laminates remain permitted until 2030, after which they fall under technical exemptions with extended recycling obligations. Recommendation: premium range in aluminum, mass market in mono-PE.
Compostable direct-marketer solution
Kraft paper/PLA laminates are industrially compostable to EN 13432. Suitable for farm shops, café sales, local direct marketing with short shelf-life requirements. Not suitable for online retail with warehousing.
Recycling the aroma valves
PP aroma valves remain separable from the PE stream by density selection during the recycling process and are processed separately. Mono-PE Doypacks with a valve are therefore fully recyclable.
Frequently Asked Questions about Coffee Packaging
Which coffee packaging format is the best?
It depends on the application and brand positioning. Flat coffee bags = economical. Stand-up pouches coffee = standing, POS-ready. Block bottom bags coffee = premium box shape.
Why do I need an aroma valve?
Freshly roasted coffee releases CO₂ for several days. Without a valve, internal pressure builds up and the bag bursts. The valve lets CO₂ out and blocks oxygen. Essential for fresh packaging.
Is it possible without a valve?
Yes – if the coffee has waited 7–10 days after roasting with “degassing time” for a "resting process" and CO₂ release has subsided. Typical for industrial processes.
Which variant for specialty coffee?
For specialty coffee (SCA 88+), preferably aluminum stand-up pouches with a valve and zip – maximum aroma/light protection, resealable.
Which variant for an organic roastery?
Kraft paper formats → stand-up pouches kraft paper or block bottom bags kraft paper. A natural look with an aroma barrier.
Which sizes are usual?
250 g = 130×220 mm. 500 g = 160×270 mm. 1 kg = 200×330 mm. For espresso ranges sometimes smaller (50–100 g).
With a zip closure for end customers?
Yes – stand-up pouches with zip are ideal for home storage. They combine aroma protection with repeated opening.
Is the packaging food-grade?
Yes – to EU 10/2011 and often LFGB certified. Declaration of conformity on request.
How long does coffee keep in the packaging?
Unopened in an aluminum laminate: 12–18 months. After opening, max. 4–6 weeks for top aroma. For longer storage, "longer is better" does not apply.
Which packaging for cold brew concentrates?
For liquid cold brew concentrates you need different packaging – stand-up pouches with a spout or special liquid pouches. Talk to us for advice.
Printable with tasting notes and region?
Yes – full back-label labelling with tasting notes, region, varietal, processing, altitude, roast-date field. → Custom production.
How sustainable is coffee packaging?
Aluminum laminate is difficult to recycle (not a single-grade material). Mono-material bags with a high-barrier film are the sustainable premium alternative → Sustainable packaging.
With a roast-date stamp field?
Yes – bags with a reserved field for a roast-date stamp that you stamp individually after roasting. Important for specialty roasteries as a freshness indicator.
Suitable for home roasters and hobby roasters?
Yes – we also supply small quantities with no minimum order. Ideal for hobby roasters and small budding artisan producers.
